The ALF were originally formed in the UK during the 1970s by animal rights activist Ronnie Lee, who had previously been involved with a group called The Band of Mercy as well as the Hunt Saboteurs Association.
The Earth Liberation Front (ELF), a separate but related group, took responsibility for an arson attack on a mink research lab in Anthony Hall on the campus of Michigan State University on New Year's Eve (December) of 1999.
A breakaway group from the ALF naming itself the Justice Department was believed to have been responsible for the sending of a number of letter bombs to individuals involved in fox hunting, the fur trade or vivisectors.

Both Animal Freedom and the ALF declare that animals have a right to freedom, while the ALF thinks that some animals should be literally liberated.
The ALF's main concern are laboratory animals and animals kept for their fur; AF's primary concern are factory animals kept in industrialized animal husbandry methods (factory farming).
Animal Freedom thinks that its considerations and actions are honorable and are shared by many people, and can therefore best be made public.

As an animal rights advocate for about 8 years, I figured that it was finally time to read "Animal Liberation", hailed as the "Bible" of the modern animal rights movement.
Simply put, Singer argues that humans should not eat animals because the benefit (or utility) to humans is outweighed by the harm (or disutility) to the animals prior to humans consuming them.
Many animal advocates will be surprised to read that Singer's theory allows for the eating of animals (so long as the animals are treated well prior to consuming them), but strangely does not justify stopping there.
