Animal magnetism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Animal magnetism (also known eponymously as mesmerism, after Franz Mesmer) is the 18th century term for the ethereal medium postulated by Franz Mesmer as a therapeutic agent.
Its existence was examined by a French royal commission in 1784, and the commission concluded there was no evidence of its existence or efficacy of the animal magnetic fluid, and that its effects derived from either the imaginations of its subjects or charlatanry.
Mesmer chose the word "animal", for its root meaning (from latin animus = "breath") specifically to identify his force/power as a quality that belonged to all creatures with breath; viz., the animate beings: humans and animals.

 CSEC -- Animal Magnetism
The author's own observations of the workings of animal magnetism convince her that it is not a remedial agent, and that its effects upon those who practise it, and upon their subjects who do not resist it, lead to moral and to physical death.
If animal magnetism seems to alleviate or to cure disease, this appearance is deceptive, since error cannot remove the effects of error.
So secret are the present methods of animal magnetism that they ensnare the age into indolence, and produce the very apathy on the subject which the criminal desires.

He surmised that a universal magnetic fluid existed in all “objects that produced disease when it was out of balance in the human body”.
Mesmer began to cultivate techniques that he thought would re-establish the equilibrium of the magnetic fluid, and as a result, diseases would be cured.
Whenever a magnet was brought into contact with a patient, the subtle and mysterious fluid exuded by the magnet entered the body of the patient and healed him of his complaint.

Then what we did was we extracted the magnetic material and we looked at it under a powerful microscope and we found minute hexagonal crystals of magnetite and these were beautifully shaped, beautiful crystalline particles, which is different from the magnetite that we find for example in soils and rocks.
Turtles exposed to the magnetic field north of their home area responded by swimming towards the south, whereas turtles that were exposed to the southern magnetic field responded by swimming towards the north.
In other words, it is entirely possible that an animal like a sea turtle has one kind of receptor for detecting the direction of the field and another kind of receptor for detecting elements of the Earth’s field that are used in the magnetic map.

Thouret had reviewed the phenomena throughout the ages, finding the name "animal magnetism" was otherwise used intending to disassociate it from ferro-magnetism indicating that the mesmeric or mesmeric fluid was associated with an unusual phenomena in living organisms.
Animal Magnetism became the preferred term used by experimenters and writers such as J. Deleuze (1753-1835) and William Gregory (1803-1858), translator of Baron von Reikenbach's "Odic Force" (associated with animal magnetism).
Animal Magnetism has been labeled other terms in order to give it some scientific dignity.

Mesmer plagiarized Hell's magnetic therapy and posited that it works because there is a very subtle magnetic fluid flowing through everything but which sometimes gets disturbed and needs to be restored to its proper flow.
Rather than attribute this to the placebo effect, he posited that "animal magnetism" accounted for his ability to correct the flow of the universal magnetic fluid.

The magnet, whether natural or artificial, is like other bodies susceptible of animal magnetism, and even of the opposite virtue: in neither case does its action on fire and the needle [of a compass] suffer any change, and this shows that the principle of animal magnetism essentially differs from that of mineral magnetism.
It teaches us that the magnet and artificial electricity have, with respect to diseases, properties common to a host of other agents presented to us by nature, and that if the use of these has been attended by some useful results, they are due to animal magnetism.

Although Animal Magnetism contains such classic songs as "The Zoo" and "Make It Real," the album is somewhat disappointing when compared to its predecessor, Lovedrive.
The well-written songs on this album end up saving it from total disaster, and it's obvious the band wasn't sure what to exactly put on this record -- many of the songs sound like the work of some other rock group and simply don't blend together as they should.
Although far from bad, Animal Magnetism isn't a highlight of the Scorpions' career.
