  Animal Realm - Buddhism
A lot of people when they think of animals think of pampered pets, but even these well loved animals suffer because they are living in ignorance, they have no way obtaining the knowledge and taking the steps towards enlightenment.
In the wild, animals are ruled by instinct and are either predator or prey.
The carnivores on the other hand are doomed from the start, driven by an instinct to survive they must kill and feed on the innocent or parish.

The animal world has the same composition of the plant one: body, soul, and energetic spirit; there is an added inter-connection between body and energetic spirit.
Animals, from the smallest to the biggest, have a capability of instinctive reasoning (not logical) which comes from the impulses sent by the energy to the body.
Many souls of animals are humans have who misunderstood God's will, and during their lives were guilty of such grave actions, that necessitated a temporary separation, and a rest, in the animal world.

Animals in Buddhism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The position and treatment of animals in Buddhism is important for the light it sheds on Buddhists' perception of their own relation to the natural world, on Buddhist humanitarian concerns in general, and on the relationship between Buddhist theory and Buddhist practice.
The stories sometimes involve animals alone, and sometimes involve conflicts between humans and animals; in the latter cases, the animals often exhibit characteristics of kindness and generosity that are absent in the humans.
However, they are forbidden from accepting animal flesh if they know, believe or suspect that the animal in question was killed especially for them, i.e., if the visits of begging monks have become an occasion for the slaughter of animals.

When the animal is in the process of dying or even after its breath has stopped, if you have some sand from a Kalachakra sand mandala, you can mix it with butter and put it on the crown of the animal’s head.
The way we practice animal liberation causes the person who liberates them to have a long life, but that alone doesn’t ultimately help the animals, so the best thing to do is to circumambulate the animals around holy objects and bless them with mantras and prayers.

But that which is beyond the range of the senses, that realm of phenomena through which the conscious pathway to the Kingdom of God leads, the world of spiritual susceptibilities and divine religion,-- of these the animal is completely unaware, for in its highest station it is a captive of nature.
In fact from this standpoint the animal is the greater philosopher because it is completely ignorant of the Kingdom of God, possesses no spiritual susceptibilities and is uninformed of the heavenly world.
Therefore the realm of the religionist has gradually narrowed and darkened and the sphere of the materialist has widened and advanced; for the religionist has held to imitation and counterfeit, neglecting and discarding holiness and the sacred reality of religion.

Six realms - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Six realms (Tibetan: rigs drug gi skye gnas), are six divisions of the possible states of rebirth in traditional Buddhist cosmology.
The Six realms are also called the "six paths of rebirth", the "six paths of suffering", the "six planes", and the "six lower realms" (by contrast with the higher attainments of the Ten spiritual realms).
In the Bhavacakra (example), a popular depiction of the Six realms, the realm of the Devas is placed at the top, followed clockwise by the realms of the Asuras, the Pretas, Naraka, Animals, and Humans.

The higher animals were sometimes deliberate and sophisticated in their actions, some positive, some negative.
The humans reborn as animals had no conscious recollection of their previous lives as humans, but did tend to possess a higher intelligence than other animal peers, and thus usually had the tools to make decisions which might lead to a better animal rebirth, or possibly a human rebirth.

With the realm that is mirrored here on earth in animal existence, however, he is much involved, in that after death certain forces immediately awaken in him, in that he immediately enters and works within a domain of forces that rule this animal realm.
In these realms we are not separated from the dead at all, but it is like this: when one goes through the portal of death and experiences the strengthening and weakening of the will, one can live with the so-called living in their physical bodies, though not with everyone.
Quite another realm is thus continually reaching into our lives, the realm of destiny, a realm to which as yet modern man pays no attention, because he casts his gaze only at what has happened and has no interest in what is constantly being prevented from happening in his life.

Another reason why one may study hairs is for animal distribution; certain areas are surveyed to determine if a species is present in that area.
