Tim Alexander - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tim left Primus in 1996, only to rejoin in 2003 for the album Animals Should Not Try to Act Like People and recent tours.
Although originally inspired to become a rock drummer by John Bonham and Neil Peart, Primus guitarist Ler LaLonde claims Alexander's drum beats are mostly influenced by African Juju music.
There are rumors he was somehow involved in the Bay Area thrash scene like Claypool and LaLonde.

Claypool should really consider trying to act like a likeable person sometime, but there's probably just too much animal in him for that to ever happen.
Animals Should Not Try To Act Like People is mainly for diehard Primus fans.
This animal house is also a full house, with an oddly shaped foundation where its beauty — or lack thereof — is forever in the eyes of the beholders.

It should also be said that like those animals we are in need of a zookeeper or of a farmer to care for us.
Like cows and sheep it is appropriate that we deliver all our productivity to the farmer and like lions in the zoo, it is appropriate that resources like food are distributed to all animals equally.
Resembling animals, we ought to dismiss the quaint notion of “family” along with terms such as “evil,” “soul,” or “faith.” Needless to say, homosexuality is perfectly “natural” and harvesting the young for their skins or stem cells is perfectly “normal.”

With "Animals Should Not Try To Act Like People" Primus have decided to re-introduce themselves to both each other and their audience, as well as reward their long-time fans with a comprehensive DVD package that contains hours upon hours of Primus videos, live performances and rare footage.
Undoubtedly with a bit of touring under their belts the group will be back in fine form and the new cuts on hand do bode well for a future release overall.
Getting a whack of new Primus material is a treat in itself, but when coupling it with the extensive DVD outing that is packaged alongside it, "Animals Should Not Try To Act Like People" is pretty much a must have purchase for anyone even remotely interested in the band.

I’ve heard myself utter these exact words: “I’m going to play like Les some day.” So when the new EP surfaced and the reunion of the band occurred, my first instinct was to think of the bass.
So if you are a Primus fan primarily of Les’ guitar prowess, this teaser EP should satisfy your disappointed mind state since their original break-up.
And Animals Should Not Try To Act Like People only emphasizes that Primus’ career has only depended on four strings and one hell of a guitar player, period.

The new album/DVD set Animals Should Not Try to Act Like People is a throwback to the days of the band’s original lineup including Les Claypool (bass, vocals), Larry LaLonde (guitar) and Tim Alexander (drums), but shows an evolved style and outlook that the members bring to the 21st century.
Animals Should Not Try to Act Like People, however, does uphold the key elements that have been at the band’s core since the beginning: musical creativity and eccentricity.
As an entire piece of work, Animals Should Not Try to Act Like People sets a standard for rock records of this new era of music consumption.

Primus [+] is all about Les Claypool [+]; there isn't a moment on any of their records where his bass isn't the main focal point of the music, with his vocals acting as a bizarre side-show.
All of this means that they are miles away from being another punk-funk combo like the Red Hot Chili Peppers [+]; Claypool may slap and pop his bass, but there is little funk in the rhythm he and Alexander lay down.

The "Animals" EP marks the first time the original lineup has recorded new music since its re-formation.
Nor does Claypool necessarily think the EP should be taken as a clear signal of future Primus intent.
Grass-roots, word-of-mouth beginnings didn't hurt; nor has the blossoming, with the success of the likes of the Dave Matthews Band and Phish, of a fan network that supports all kinds of jamming from all kinds of musicians.

Primus began selling out local clubs with their out-of-control live act and irreverent approach to music (their catchphrase was "Primus sucks!").
In late 2003 Claypool reunited with former Primus drummer Tim Alexander and guitarist Larry LaLonde to record a DVD/EP called Animals Should Not Try to Act Like People, which Claypool described as the first DVD with supplementary music, as opposed to the contrary.
She also opened on every show(sometimes to scathingly negative reviews) during the 2004 tour as a solo act with sometimes members of Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains.

Les started a series of high profile side projects like the Frog Brigade (which was more of a jam band) and Oysterhead (which saw him teaming up with ex-Police drummer Stewart Copeland and Phish guitarist/vocalist Trey Anastasio).
Primus has been away for over 4 years and this package is acting as sort of a re-introduction of the band to today's listeners as well as showing where all the band has been and come from.

Sounding like, in singer/bass player Les Claypool’s words, 'angry chickens or maybe a space robot', Primus are a bass heavy experimental funk (ish) band with strong hints of heavy rock influences.
The answer is very possibly 'yes' if you hanker after a band that sound like The Red Hot Chili Peppers used to sound like in their more free-flow early experimental years.

The most endearing thing about music is that there's always someone, somewhere, who is going to love a band that might send other people to the medicine cabinet.
Maybe the moral of this night is that "Bands Should Not Try to Play 12-Year-Old Albums." Sorry for the cheap shot, but even the video imagery, which had been so brilliant in the first half of the show, bogged down into endless images of people looking dazed.
If the band had delivered another set like that, this reunion would have been more memorable, rather than the force-fed "Sailing the Seas of Cheese," which proved to be an unintended anticlimax.
