Animation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Generating such a film tends to be very labour intensive and tedious, though the development of computer animation has greatly sped up the process.
The "classic" form of animation, the "animated cartoon", as developed in the early 1900s and refined by Walt Disney and others, requires up to 24 distinct drawings for one second of animation.
Because animation is very time-consuming and often very expensive to produce, the majority of animation for TV and movies comes from professional animation studios.

Combining flashy imagery with a lot of violence and gratuitous sex, the film was the animated version of the comic book series of the same name and an easy to digest feast for pubescent boys with rock music influences and heroic dreams about a glorified adulthood filled with raunchy sex, drugs and rock and roll.
The film completely captured and epitomized all the stereotypes of the generation and is now brought to DVD as a special edition by Columbia TriStar Home Video.
Columbia’s release of this film is a fine example of a great special edition with tons of supplements to support the actual feature film.

Animated feature films are viewed very highly, especially in Disney's case.
Overall, I think the animated feature film is beginning to evolve out of the "kids only" realm, but it hasn't gotten very far yet in the eyes of the general public.
Good animated films that offer non-kid content, although they might be kid-friendly, are not really for kids and tend to get overlooked which I think is unfortunate.

Films - Animation World News Issue 2.7, October 1997
Since the film was released in July, it has enjoyed sold-out shows at theaters throughout Japan, bringing in approximately U.S. $108 million at the box office in Japan, more than five times the amount of money that producers, Studio Ghibli, spent to make the film.
These figures are impressive considering the price of a movie ticket in Japan these days is the equivalent of U.S. The popularity of the film in Japan could be attributed to Miyazaki's recent announcement that this is the last animated feature film that he will direct.
