Cartography - Encyclopedia.WorldSearch   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Maps have traditionally been made using pen and paper, but the advent and spread of computers has revolutionized cartography.
The Greeks also developed the science of map projections, which are methods of representing the curved surface of the earth on a plane.
The land on the map was divided into three parts by a T shape in which Asia occupied the top of the T area, Europe the bottom left and Africa the bottom right.

Movement given to an inanimate object, such as a drawing, puppet, or modelling clay; also, a cartoon, or animated film, in which a drawing or object is photographed in a series, with small changes of movement, usually by exposing the film frame by frame.
The most celebrated and key exponent of cartoon animation was Walt Disney, who inspired the first wave of the large Japanese animation industry.
By 1992 about 40 animated weekly TV series were produced in Japan, as well as feature-length films for video release.

But, as a matter of fact, it is animation which seems to be the most important aspect of the computer impact on cartography, both for cartographic cognition, analysis and communication of spatial data, just as GIS is for their analysis.
Now with animated mapping it is possible to give a real sense of motion - either by providing the sensation of moving oneself or by moving the object, or both, or by having the object subjected to change.
In spatially dynamic animations it is the action which is frozen, but the map frame is not (animating space can either be the process of panning and zooming into a large two-dimensional static image (Dorling 1992)), or the process of changing the representation mode of the action (Peterson 1993).

CGTalk - challenge for you all!
I animated the UVW mapping for this displacement map so that it wouldn't appear on the plane at first, but would be in place after the wave had passed.
Instead of using a noise map directly, I think I'd render out an animation of the noise I was using, and then use a compositing program to pixelate that video, and then use the video in place of the noise map.
Since we need to animate the motion of the UVW mapping for this map, we need it to be slightly longer than our other maps (it'll allow us to have a soft edge on our mask).

An exhibition, titled The Power of Maps, concerning cartography as a medium and a metaphor for understanding the world and our place in it, took place at the Cooper-Hemitt Museum from October 1992 to March 1993, and was repeated at SI's International Gallery from November 1993 through January 1994.
A variety of historic and contemporary maps were presented, illustrating how maps are researched and compiled, designed and structured (map language), updated, and analyzed.
GIS mapping and spatial analytical technology, operations, and applications all but require cooperative efforts that at a minimum entail sharing information and digital data sets, and subsequently coordinating their processing, combination, and analysis.

CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Making of the Catholic Encyclopedia
As other volumes followed with promptness and regularity, the public soon became aware that the Encyclopedia was rapidly passing from the region of things possible and desirable to that of accomplished facts, and moreover that it was taking a unique position among the important publications of modern times.
This was arranged in thirty-two departments which were then distributed so as to allow each editor a certain group of departments for special supervision and yet leave to the Board as a whole the final decision upon the inclusion or exclusion of any proposed subject.
The maps had to be specially prepared for the Encyclopedia, as they were designed to show not only the political or territorial divisions, but also the ecclesiastical conditions, such as the location of each episcopal or archiepiscopal see.
