Situation comedy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sitcoms usually consist of recurring characters in a format in which there are one or more humorous story lines centred on a common environment, such as a family, home or workplace.
Most sitcoms took this format; events of previous episodes would rarely be mentioned in subsequent episodes and while school friends or beloved relatives might appear, often they would only be seen once in the series, and they would rarely be mentioned in subsequent episode, something apparent in The Brady Bunch and many other programs.
A common aspect of family sitcoms is that at some point in their run they introduce an addition to the family in the form of a new baby.

Though earlier animated series (such as The Critic) experimented with this style, few before Family Guy wandered the line between reality and fantasy with such aggression.
Indeed, the use of this style has been parodied by the show itself; an entire episode was revealed to have been a dream concocted by Pam Ewing, a character from the television series Dallas, which retconned an entire season to the same conceit.
Of course, the nuclear family is a sitcom staple, as are boorish father/husband figures, and the children in the Griffin family are vastly different in terms of personality from their Simpsons counterparts.

Throughout the run of the animated shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show, the animation was solely produced domestically at Klasky Csupo.
Animation scholars and fans have noted that the series uses the medium of animation to its advantage, allowing the show to take place in many settings and feature a far greater cast of characters than a live-action sitcom.
During most of the 1980s, animated shows were seen as being for kids and the animation was too expensive to get quality suitable for prime time television.

NBC should take little pride in its new animated sitcom
The series fancifully depicts the family life of just-like-people lions featured in the Las Vegas animal act of Siegfried & Roy, who was critically injured by a tiger in October - after the series was well into production.
For instance, the premiere episode finds Larry the head lion (Goodman) in a typical sitcom jam: Wife Kate (Hines) won't have sex with him until he can find someone to date a lovelorn friend.
It's a family sitcom about lions that is neither fish nor fowl.

But now, the WB and UPN are both grouping all their fl sitcoms together into a single night's programming block (Tuesday for UPN, Thursday for the WB), citing low ratings for the shows when they were scattered throughout the week.
In a December New York Times article on this "segregation" of sitcoms, executives from several networks were asked to explain the near disappearance of fl sitcoms from prime time; each termed it an economic necessity, complaining that it was impossible to get white viewers to watch what were perceived as "fl" shows.
But the biracial success of those '70s sitcoms had a lot to do with the times; back then, whites and fls were moving toward, not away from, embracing one another, and TV execs saw promoting racial harmony as a (profitable) civic duty.

While not as universally popular as The Simpsons, Futurama is equally hip and hilarious, thanks to its zippy lateral-thinking contemporary pop cultural references, celebrity appearances (Pamela Anderson and Leonard Nimoy are among a number of guest stars to appear as disembodied heads in jars) and Bender, a distinctly Homer Simpson-esque robot.
The animation had settled down (in the first series, the characters look eerily distorted when viewed years later), while Dan Castellaneta, who voiced Homer, decided to switch from a grumpy Walter Matthau impression to a more full-on, bulbous wail.

While other series use multiple layers of animation cells for each scene of a program, “King Of The Hill” uses a watercolor backgrounds with only the characters animated on the cells, which gives the show a unique look that is definitely far more refined than “Beavis And Butthead” ever appeared on MTV.
Some of the scenes are animatics and there is even an alternate ending for the episode “The Company Man.” The same holds true for the 13 TV promo spots included on disc three.
