Anja Silja began her operatic career at a very early age.

BBC News | ARTS | Anja Silja: Opera's femme fatale
Celebrated soprano Anja Silja, who enjoys one of opera's longest and most varied careers, is currently centre-stage at the Royal Opera House in a role she has made her own.
Tragedy struck Silja again, as she fell in love with the Belgian-born conductor Andre Cluytens, who died in Paris, less than a year later.
Silja says she must put herself into her music and given her own life-story, maybe that is the key to her success.

Anja Silja's portrayal here of Kostelnicka is epic; she makes us understand the misplaced morality of this troubled, troubling character--a morality that leads to catastrophe.
The highlights of this new set are many, not least Anja Silja's return to the role of the Kostelnicka, Karita Mattila's first appearance in the title-role in Britain, and the outstanding Laca of Jorma Silvasti.
Anja Silja may be a little too old for the opera in the theatre, but her voice and presence here on disc surely make her the Kostelnicka of recent times.

When Anja Silja's name materialised out of the air in the Royal Opera schedules - replacing a suddenly indisposed Deborah Polaski as the Kostelnicka in this week's Jenufa - you could almost hear the sigh of relief that passed among British opera-lovers who had thought they might never see her on stage again.

Shorn of her physical presence, without her gripping stage performance to focus on, Anja Silja's stern depiction of Kostelnicka Buryjovka is put under considerable stress.
This led me to wonder whether my strictures on the quality of Anja Silja's voice might also, quite reasonably, be laid at the door of the recording engineer.
Silja's vocal limitations emphasise her character's anger and under pressure she often sounds furious.

 Anja Silja Profile
A native of Berlin, Anja Silja started her vocal studies at the age of six and gave her first performance at the city's Titania Palace at the age of ten.
It was the beginning of a long and distinguished career both at home and abroad, and she made her stage debut at the age of sixteen in Braunschweig as Rosina in The Barber of Seville.
From the beginning of her career, Anja Silja sang a large and varied repertoire which included virtually all the major soprano roles in opera.

Silja is Emilia Marty, an opera prima donna who, despite being 337 years old (a fact unknown to everyone around her) is sexually irresistable.
She has consumed an anti-ageing potion brewed by her father, and towards the end of the opera the question is raised of the desirability of such a potion being available.
Silja is perfect vocally and dramatically - although an argument could be made for Emilia to look and sound slightly younger.

 Silja Salome
German soprano Anja Silja (born 1940) started her singing career early.
Silja, like Gwyneth Jones, was a singer whose promising voice began to disintegrate early.
Sound quality for the Silja performance is well-balanced and natural; on my copy there was a tracking problem with track 8 on CD 1; three different players could not track it properly.

Anja Silja characterizes Salome's different moods quite well, but her voice is not up to the music's demands.
The recording of this excerpt of the final scene comes from 1974, with Christoph von Dohnanyi (who also works wonders with his insightful performances of Strauss) conducting future wife Anja Silja in a performance that transforms the horror of the scene into an object of beauty.
Silja's voice pierces the orchestra like a silver bullet in this night of moonlit madness, with its nightmarish phantasms of a fin de siecle Vienna, of obsessive lust consuming all in its path, of sexual (and perhaps spiritual) transfiguration proclaimed by the cosmic ascension of horns at the final scene's climax.

First, to the whole performance: The leadership by Zdenek Kosler, the immensely experienced Czech opera conductor, is handsome and urgent, and he keeps the orchestra in check nicely for Anja Silja.
Silja is an intelligent, sexy singer whose voice just happened to be a size or two too small for Salome.
What is missing from Silja's portrayal becomes clear when you turn to the three bonus finales: The first features Varnay in the title role in 1953, and she is a force of nature, hurling her voice with absolute security and expressivity--indeed, she sounds as if she could do the whole thing over again if asked.

 An evening with Anja Silja
It was hard to believe this was Miss Silja`s debut there.
the evening consisted of a balanced mix of video and cd clips, conversation with Edward Seckerson and Miss Silja singing (despite being very ill with `stomach `flu`) 6 Early Songs by Schoenberg to close part one, and emilia Marty`s finale from Vêc Makropoulos which was stunning.
What came across most strongly from the interview was what a warm and charming personality Silja has, and how fearless she was in her early years taking on demanding and heavy roles quite young.

My first experience of the talents of Anja Silja—recently at the Brooklyn Academy of Music—were at Bayreuth, where she made her Festival debut in 1960, under the masterful direction of the late Wieland Wagner.

Wieland surely found the acting-abilities and performance-instincts of Anja Silja a tremendous inspiration in his stagings.

Her colleagues are excellent, with the veteran Anja Silja in fine form as Herodias, and Robert Hale and Reiner Goldberg also both sounding wonderful.
