Anketell Moutray Read was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
He was 30 years old, and a Captain in the 1st Bn., The Northamptonshire Regiment, British Army during the First World War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.
On 25 September 1915 near Hulloch, France, Captain Read, although partially gassed, went out several times in order to rally parties of different units which were disorganised and retiring.

A native of Bampton, Devon, he was a Captain in the Royal Flying Corps, but at the time of his V.C. deed he was attached to the 1st Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment, British Army.

Captain Read had previously shown conspicuous bravery during digging operations on 29th, 30th and 31st August, 1915, and on the night of the 29th-30th July he carried out of action an officer, who was mortally wounded, under a hot fire from rifles and grenades." Read’s medal is on display at the Northamptonshire Regiment Museum, Northampton.

Anketell, who was of undaunted courage, burst into the fort, at the head of his troops, routed and pursued the enemy with considerable slaughter, but was himself slain in the hour of victory.
Anketell was interred in the aisle of Glasslough church with great solemnity, and a plain stone with an inscription has been set up to his memory.

During the Siege of Delhi, India, on 14th September 1857, Surgeon Reade was attending to the wounded, at the end of one of the the city's streets, when a party of rebels advanced, from the direction of the Bank, towards where he was working.
Surgeon Reade called upon the few soldiers that were there, around 10 in all, and drawing his sword led them, under extremely heavy fire from the rebels, towards their positions and dislodged them.
Two days later, at the assault on Delhi, Surgeon Reade was amongst the first at the breach in the magazine, where he, and a sergeant, spiked one of the enemy's guns.

The other daughter Ann, married John Moutray and moved into the house at Favour Royal in 1670 the Moutray family continued to live there until the death of Mrs Anketell Moutray on New years day 1975.
Difficult for you to read, but this is the welcome that sits just over head height, on the left hand corner of the main door way.
It reads, "Welcome to come in 1670 and as welcome to go by".
