Ankh-Morpork Assassins' Guild - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Assassins' Guild as described in the books (especially Pyramids and the aforementioned diary) is a parody of English public schools, especially as they are portrayed in fiction.
The Guild of Assassins is located in a light, airy series of buildings opposite the Guild of Fools and Joculators, which is often mistaken for it, being a far more sinister building.
However, those who do not graduate are generally never seen again; as noted in Wyrd Sisters, the Guild is fond of competitive examination.

The Thieves' Guild moved into the long-vacated Ankh-Morpork Courthouse, and, due to their new obligation to prevent unauthorised theft, quickly became the major law-enforcement body of the city, causing the Ankh-Morpork City Watch to slide even further into the pit of depression they would remain in until Carrot Ironfoundersson's arrival.

 The Assassins' Guild: Unofficial FAQ
The Cambridge University Assassins' Guild plays a game every Michaelmas and Lent term, in which each player is given the names of other players in Cambridge and has to hunt them down and "kill" them using a variety of simulated assassination techniques such as water pistols, cardboard knives and imitation bombs and poisons.
Assassins social events that take place during the game are generally ruled out-of-bounds so that people can come along without fear of being killed, and players who want to meet up during the game are quite at liberty to agree between themselves not to kill each other.
Assassins in general are very sympathetic towards the desire to see one's friends without constantly being in fear for one's life, and take a very dim view of people who break no-kill agreements made for social purposes.

Terry Pratchett & Stephen Briggs:  Discworld Fools' Guild Yearbook and Diary 2000
Located next to the Ankh-Morpork AssassinsGuild (discussed in the 2000 diary), the Fools’ Guild is a grim place dedicated to turning people into serious satirists and less savory occupations.
The information in the Discworld Fools’ Guild Yearbook and Diary 2001 is not as complete as in last year’s entry in the series, but it still in an entertaining diary and eminently usable, should the owner decide to use it as a diary rather than as a source of additional information about the Discworld.
The fact that the Fools’ Guild has appeared so rarely in the Discworld series means that Pratchett and Briggs had a nearly completely empty slate for creating the background of this organization.

The Vetinari Library: The Discworld Companion
Although the current system in Ankh-Morpork consists almost entirely of 'Guild Justice' enforced by the city's Guilds, it is still the case that criminals taken by the Watch may opt to stand for trail before the Patrician.
No one is certain why the Patrician, who has a relaxed approach to assassins and thieves, has this particular quirk, but the citizens of Ankh-Morpork seem quite happy to accept it.
There are Guild laws, administered by the various Guilds and often the cause of friction between them (see Vetinari, Lord), but laws in the modern sense have gone out of fashion in the last several hundred years.
