Mary Ann Sharwood   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Mary Ann was baptised at St Clement's Church on December 18th 1814, the daughter of William and Elizabeth Sharwood (pronounced Sherwood).
If a story about Mary Ann is correct that she was given land during her time at the: whaling station in return for saving a young Maori girl, it may be this land, probably at Whangatoetoe Bay, that Robert Register now farmed.
For Mary Ann life as a farmer's wife would be little different to her life as a whaler's wife, except for her isolation away from the more populated area of Port Underwood.

 Solstice
The flood plain is the area into which water spills out when the creek rises out of the flood way--the direct channel containing the surging water.
Some see Allen's Creek flood plain and flood way as a source of substantial tracts of land that they believe could be successfully developed, sometimes citing arguments that promoting density in the downtown area (where there is substantial existing infrastructure) can reduce sprawl.
For them, the flood plain and flood way offer opportunity: their arguments are often couched in terms that suggest opportunity for others as well (sprawl reduction through promoting density, affordable housing, or needed dollars for the city).

This meeting was to fulfill a requirement for funding from FEMA for a Flood Mitigation Plan (this is the third study currently outstanding—Calthorpe, FEMA remapping, and the Flood Mitigation Plan).
One thing that I didn’t know was that most of Ann Arbor does not fall under the state guidelines for floodplain regulation because the drainage areas cover fewer than two square miles.
Since the grant is for a mitigation project within the City of Ann Arbor (presumably to reduce FEMA costs?), the floodplain areas were the focus.

Allen's Creek is a tributary to the Huron River that rises on the south side of town, near Pioneer High School.
The extreme position here might see removal of all structure from the flood plain and flood way, conversion of them into parkland that could serve as a buffer between adjacent non-floodplain properties and an unearthed Allen's Creek allowed to follow its natural channel.
This "belief" often centers on maps: what is a flood plain and do the maps represent the situation in a realistic fashion.
