Barnes & Noble.com - Looking for Lovedu: Days and Nights in Africa - Ann Jones - Paperback
Ann Jones writes of how she travels on in search of the Lovedu people: through Tanzania and Malawi and the Tete Corridor of Mozambique to the ruins of the once-magnificent city of Great Zimbabwe.
Jones (Women Who Kill, etc.) and her companion, a brawny and intrepid British photographer, resolve to cross the African continent in a souped-up Land Rover, ostensibly on a mission to find the legendary Lovedu tribe of southern Africa.
Jones spices her stories with occasional doses of history and writes in a prose that is at once captivating and beautiful, humorous and exciting.

[minstrels] After the Funeral (In memory of Ann Jones) -- Dylan Thomas
But I, Ann's bard on a raised hearth, call all The seas to service that her wood-tongud virtue Babble like a bellbuoy over the hymning heads, Bow down the walls of the ferned and foxy woods That her love sing and swing through a brown chapel, Blees her bent spirit with four, crossing birds.
Her flesh was meek as milk, but this skyward statue With the wild breast and blessed and giant skull Is carved from her in a room with a wet window In a fiercely mourning house in a crooked year.
Her "scrubbed and sour humble hands" become "These cloud-sopped, marble hands," "her threadbare/Whisper in a damp word" becomes "this monumental/Argument of the hewn voice." And the two conditions join, as well, in one tremendously powerful line, "And sculptured Ann is seventy years of stone." The conclusion returns to the images that inspired the monument.

Jones is a bit of a well-kept secret-she's not some one whose work is all over the pop charts.
In person, "L.A. Jones" is generally quite thoughtful, serious and businesslike, but a puckish sense of humor underscores her get-the-job-done mentality, and those in the know appreciate her relaxed approach to even the largest and most complicated sessions.
Although she continues as a hands-on recording and mixing engineer, Jones is also Director of Music Recording and Scoring for George Lucas' Skywalker Sound complex in Northern California, and this year she's also added to her workload the position of Chairwoman of the Board of Trustees of the Recording Academy.

Decorated caskets, which appear in two of Jones's examples (Figures 23 and 25) and hold their owners' "needles and thread, pens and ink, pearls and gold" (Jones 24), are comparable to the "coffer" that legally defines a female proprietary space.
Although Jones doesn't speculate about what her subjects did with their needlework, other studies have shown that needlework attained a more public importance, either in the gift exchanges that Klein studies or as a commodity that women made to sell.
Needlework's very status as a moveable good--along with the objects it attached to--enabled it to traverse boundaries between public and private and to extend women's power in the domestic realm into the more political or public spaces outside the household.
