Ann Miller, born Johnnie Lucille Collier on April 12, 1923 in Houston, Texas, began dancing lessons when she was five as part of her therapy from an attack of rickets.
Ann was signed to a seven-year contract (she was only 13 but lied and said she was 18).
Miller asked to be let out of her contract with RKO and soon headed to New York to appear in George White's Scandals on Broadway in 1939.

Having moved from Texas to Hollywood with her mother when she was ten, Ann Miller danced in local vaudeville houses and even played a few bit-parts in films before being recommended to a talent scout by RKO contract starlet Lucille Ball.
Ann then returned to RKO where she appeared with the Marx Brothers in ROOM SERVICE (1938) -- not one of their better comedic outings, but a film which continued to give Ann needed exposure to depression-era movie audiences.
At the end of 1938, Ann won release from her RKO contract and spent a year on Broadway before returning to Hollywood and a new seven-year contract with Columbia Pictures.

Although we can’t begin to do her stellar career justice with just a few brief paragraphs here, it needs to be acknowledged that she appeared as a performer (beginning at age 11) in no less than 13 motion pictures, prior to her 18th birthday.
Her career took off when she was “tapped” (forgive the pun) to replace torn-tendon victim Cyd Charisse in 1948’s “Easter Parade,” and teamed with another dancing wizard, Fred Astaire (who, at 5‘ 9”, was only slightly taller, forcing Ann to work in flats).
