Anna Escobedo Cabral, Director of the Institution's Center for Latino Initiatives, former president and CEO of the Hispanic Association on Corporate Responsibility in Washington, D.C., has been nominated by President George W. Bush to be Treasurer of the United States.
Cabral was executive staff director for the U.S. Senate Republican Conference Task Force on Hispanic Affairs from 1991 to 1999, and she was deputy staff director of the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary, chaired by Sen. Orrin G. Hatch of Utah from 1993 to 1999.

Cabral said the government could wait to address the problem until the fund runs out in 40 years, but this would cause either a 20 percent increase in payroll taxes or a 30 percent cut in benefits.

Cabral says there's no question the Social Security system needs repair, since estimates indicate it will dip into the red by 2018 -- and be bankrupt in 2042 if nothing's done.
Cabral, who describes herself as a "spokesperson" for the President's Social Security reform ideas, was the keynote speaker at a meeting of credit union executives yesterday (Wednesday) in Des Moines.
