A: U.S. author, suffrage leader, and lecturer, Julia Ward Howe suggested in 1872 that there be a Mother’s Day, to be celebrated on June 2.
It was however, Anna Jarvis of Grafton, West Virginia, who began campaigning for the observance of Mother's Day on the second Sunday in May. The celebration of Mother's Day is said to have started in Grafton when Jarvis observed the anniversary of her mother's death in 1908 at the Andrews Methodist Church.
