Kate & Anna McGarrigle: French-Canadian Folk Traditionalists
Kate and Anna McGarrigle have not achieved the level of popularity and record sales of contemporary performers such as Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, the Roches, Leonard Cohen, or Maria Muldaur, but they comprise one of the most musically and lyrically gifted sister folk duos originating in the early 1970s second- generation folk-pop movement.
The McGarrigles had a surprise in store for record executives who saw them as the "next Nyro." It was their "quaint" idea to put childraising before their career.
The McGarrigles are sometimes compared to another folk-pop sister group, the Roches; in a strange coincidence, Loudon Wainwright later married Suzzy Roche.

Like one of those old Osmond family TV specials that the album's title parodies, the McGarrigles rally their kinfolk (Kate's ex-husband Loudon Wainwright III, their exceptionally talented kids Rufus and Martha) along with some high-profile pals (Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt) for a glorified after-supper sing- along.
I was first turned on to the McGarrigles by hearing Kate I think singing a track called "House in the Country" on the Albion Band record of the 80's "Rise Up Like The Sun" and was struck by the sweetness and kinda vulnerability in her voice.
I then didn't hear a lot more of the sisters until the T.V. programme Transatlantic Sessions, when their version of "Talk to me of Mendecino" was just about the greatest bit of harmony singing (and a great song)that I had heard in a long time.

Kate & Anna McGarrigle - Biography - AOL Music
Kate (b.1946) and Anna (b.1944) McGarrigle are Canadian songwriting sisters whose work first came to international recognition in 1974 when Linda Ronstadt recorded Anna's "Heart Like a Wheel" as the title song to one of her albums.
The sisters were signed to Warner Brothers and recorded Kate & Anna McGarrigle, an album of deeply felt (sometimes deeply funny) songs with a homey, eclectic folk backing and tart, striking vocals.
The McGarrigle Hour followed in 1998, followed by the McGarrigle Christmas Hour in 2005.

The songs on Kate and Anna McGarrigle's second album suffer only when compared to the impossible bounty achieved with their self-titled debut two years earlier.
The performances, however, are every bit as charming, and the arrangements extend a wise, winsome balancing act between their angelic harmonies and the vulnerable, unvarnished feel of their solos, while the best songs achieve a similar poise in matching art song ambition to folk earthiness.
Even early in their career, the McGarrigles were already wise beyond their years (not to mention their more conventional singer/songwriter peers), sustaining a wistfulness that has continued throughout their work.

An interesting idea, given the talented family tree of the McGarrigle Sisters: Gather the family together (including Kate's ex-husband Loudon Wainwright) and record a CD as they play the family piano and sing traditional folk tunes, originals, and old pop standards.
Add in some friends (Emmylou Harris turning in a stirring vocal on "Skip Rope Song"), Linda Ronstadt, and Chaim Tannenbaum, and the end result is a pleasant yet somewhat mediocre CD.
Loudon Wainwright's "Schooldays," the opening track, is an early highlight, featuring great vocals and a great tune.

Perhaps the lasting legacy of the McGarrigle/Wainwright family—mother and aunt Kate and Anna, father Loudon, kids Rufus and Martha—will be these musicians' propensity for swirling the sacred and the profane, folk tradition with urbane wit.
