In order to accept that Pacquin could turn into the sullen Gainsbourg, you have to think: That must have been a really bad school.

I won't go into the plot, and without trying to sound like a sexist, I felt that The Piano was simply a Harlequin Romance put to film.
The acting was there, and Anna Pacquin's performance as the lead's daughter has been proclaimed one of the best child acting roles ever.
However the storyline was just not there, and it was very difficult to sit for the over-2 hour film.
