Annadale is a neighborhood or section of Staten Island, New York, USA, situated on the island's South Shore.
In 1929, immigrants from Spain purchased land along the Annadale shoreline, and founded a settlement that became known as the Spanish Camp, or Spanish Colony.
Annadale once had abundant woodland, but much of it was cleared in the last three decades of the 20th Century to make room for new homes.

With a population of just over 460,000, Staten Island is often called 'the forgotten borough' or 'the step-sister borough', as it is much less well-known than its four sisters, The Bronx, Queens, Manhattan, and Brooklyn.
The bedrock of the island is a diabase formed during the volcanic eruptions that created much of the bedrock of northern New Jersey, including the New Jersey Palisades, approximately 200 million years ago.
In the Sixteenth Century, the island was part of a larger area known as Lenapehoking that was inhabited by the Lenape, an Algonquian American Indians people also called the "Delaware".

Nearby Café: Island Living A. D. Coleman Staten Island
First came my awareness of a long-standing irritation at the dismissal of everyone who lived in "the boroughs" -- that is, anywhere in New York City except Manhattan -- by the downy-cheeked parvenus on the editorial staff at the New York Observer (for whom I then freelanced as a photography critic) and elsewhere.
The second stimulus came in the form of an open invitation from the publisher and editor of the Star Reporter Publishing Co., to contribute to the papers in their group on a regular basis.
So I jumped on the invitation, initiating a column titled "Island Living." The first of these appeared in the June 1997 editions of all the papers in the chain, and has appeared there ever since; for several years, it's also been a regular feature here at The Nearby Café.
