 The Johnstones of Annandale
The title of Earl of Annandale, after lying dormant for a hundred and sixty-nine years, was revived in 1624, in favour of Sir James Murray, Viscount of Annand and Lord Murray of Lochmaben, a descendant of Sir William Murray of Cockpool and Isabel, sister of Earl Randolph.
The ‘Annandale cases’ contributed greatly to settle in Britain the important principle that the movable or personal estate of a deceased person must be distributed according to the law of the country where he had his domicile at the time of his death.
It is a recognised principle in the law of Scotland that a Scottish peer, previous to the Act of Union, provided he obtained the sanction of the Crown, might alter the limitation of his honours, in precisely the same manner as he might alter the destination of his estates.

 Robert the Bruce
Robert I, commonly Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland, was the son of the 7th Robert de Bruce, Earl of Carrick by right of his wife Marjorie, daughter of Niel, or Nigel, Earl of Carrick, and was the eighth in direct male descent from a Norman baron who came to England with William the Conqueror.
It was not their first encounter, for a letter of 1299 to Edward from Scotland describes Comyn as having seized Bruce by the throat at a meeting at Peebles, where they were with difficulty reconciled by the regents.
In 1309 a truce scarcely kept was effected by Pope Clement V and Philippe IV of France, and in 1310, in a general council at Dundee, the clergy of Scotland, all the bishops being present, recognized Bruce as king.

 A history from 800 to 1300ad
Robert de Brus, “The Noble,” was laird of Annandale and a grandson of Scotland’s King David I. During the English civil war, he raised an army of Scots and fought on the side of the English monarchy.
Grandson of the laird of Annandale Robert de Brus, “The Noble,” and son of Robert de Brus and Marjorie, countess of Carrick, the infant was born close to the line of Scottish succession, and was thus fated to become King Edward’s mortal enemy.
Edward prepared to invade Scotland with an impressive army of two thousand mounted and twelve thousand foot soldiers, though the vast majority of the latter were from Wales and Ireland, and their commitment to Edward’s war with Scotland was dubious.
