Romantic SF & Fantasy Novels | Feature: Anne Bishop Interview
Anne Bishop can make the reader feel as helpless and enraged at the plight of her heroes and heroines as deftly as she can make the reader feel joyous that her characters emerge, while not unscathed, wiser and victorious.
At her best Anne Bishop's powerful fantasies are complex and believable because of the extra touches in her writing.

Rambles: Anne Bishop, The Black Jewels Trilogy   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
She has created a universe I can barely begin to describe, a realm of kingdoms ruled by women -- in the form of witches, priestesses and Black Widow queens -- where the strongest of men are forced into the role of consort to the most vindictive of mistresses.
Bishop turns good and evil upside down in this masterful literary vision, giving us heroes the likes of Saetan the High Lord of Hayll, his sons Daemon Sadi and Lucivar, and one very special and very powerful young lady named Jaenelle Angelline.
While the question of victory is, one supposes, never much in doubt, Bishop creates a magical sense of suspense and hesitation on the part of the reader as he/she embarks on the final steps of this wondrous journey.

Bishop works her story around Jaenelle, without ever bringing it through her, only through the people who are affected by her strength.
Bishop works in many issues that are problems in our society (sexism, racism, etc.) yet gives them different viewpoints and targets, so that they are seen fresh.
Bishop has beautifully characterised her protagonists, who are complex and intriguing in their many faces, though her villains tend to be too one-sided and sketchily drawn.

It is a matter of public record that U.S. bishops have knowingly transferred thousands of abusive priests into unsuspecting parishes and dioceses, placing fear of "scandal" ahead of the welfare of children.
The bishops themselves have apologized for what they call their "mistake," but they say nothing about the crucial actions that constitute accountability.
Furthering the accountability of bishops through the posting of a complete public record of this crisis is our sole mission.

The Black Jewels Trilogy : Reviews, Prices, Deals
With The Black Jewels Trilogy (consisting of Daughter of the Blood, Heir to the Shadows, and Queen of the Darkness), Anne Bishop has taken the literature of dark fantasy to heights I never even dreamed of.
She has created a universe I can barely begin to describe, a realm of kingdoms ruled by women, in the form of witches, priestesses, and Black Widow queens, where the strongest of men are forced into the role of consort to the most vindictive of mistresses.
The Black Jewels Trilogy is literature of the highest order, more than earning author Anne Bishop the title I now personally bestow upon her: the Queen of Dark Fantasy.

Anne Bishop, The Invisible Ring   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Anne Bishop, author of the award-winning Black Jewels Trilogy, returns to the Realms for this stand-alone prequel, the setting being a pre-industrial world where magic equals power and social status is pre-eminent, the course of a person's life determined by the color of the jewel one wears as revealed in an occult birthright ritual.
The plot strands' convergence is skillfully handled, building tension and suspense right up until the end when Lord Krelis and his forces confront Lia, Jared and their intrepid band bolstered by citizens of Dena Nehele, an inevitable encounter after the pursuit/evasion scenarios that provided much of the momentum of the tale.
The characters are also especially interesting, Bishop being superb at depicting their essence through dialogue which can often be quite witty or emotionally heartwarming or chilling at the right moments.

Anne Bishop's extraordinary "Black Jewels Trilogy" is one of the most original, truly spectacular reads I have had in a long time.
Not for the squeamish, Bishop generates a very dark, sad, and disturbing mood filled with horror, sex, and violence...but she does such a great job with character development that the reader begins to empathize with the characters and appreciate their quest for happiness in this dark world.
Bishop's books forced me out of my comfort zone and to rethink my preconceived ideas about good and evil, masculine and feminine, especially when it comes to fantasy, where sometimes the whole good/evil dichomtomy becomes stale.

Anne Bishop--Queen of the Darkness   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The series is set in a world of interlinked Realms ruled by the Blood, a race of witches and warlocks whose power is channeled through magical Jewels (the darker the Jewel, the greater the power).
This theme is followed through to the bittersweet, ambiguous ending, which departs from the basic romance template (and there are many elements of genre romance in this series) in that it's not an unequivocal happy-ever-after scenario.
Bishop has made a courageous choice here, following the demands of her story rather than bowing to convention and manufacturing a cheery finish that would have fitted very poorly with the rest of this powerful tale.
