Legends Author: Anne McCaffrey   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Anne McCaffrey's Pern novels rank among the most popular series in either fantasy or science fiction -- and that's appropriate, since they fall along the blurry line that separates those two sister categories.
But McCaffrey provides her imagined world with a careful science-fictional rationale -- Pern is a distant planet colonized by humans, and the dragons are bio-engineered creatures developed by human scientists ages before.
McCaffrey currently lives in Wicklow County, Ireland, where she raises horses.

Anne McCaffrey: Dragonquest - Fantastic Reviews book review
In particular, Dragonquest is much heavier on political intrigue than Dragonflight, with emphasis on the divisions between the "modern" dragonriders and the "old-timers." The old-timers are jealous of the power and prestige they used to enjoy in their own era.
Although McCaffrey goes about framing the issues awkwardly at first, these political divisions are more interesting than any of the conflicts in the first Pern book.
Not because McCaffrey isn't capable of characterization, mind you, but rather because she so busies herself jumping between conferences among countless apostrophe-laden names that she rarely lingers on any particular characters long enough to flesh them out.

In a typical passage, Readis, the young son of Jayge and Aramina, receives a note with the news of Robinton's death; he goes from one adult to another for an explanation, and each adult promptly bursts into incoherent tears.
McCaffrey was obviously shooting for pathos here; unfortunately the effect is ludicrous, especially after the third or fourth adult, and I giggled through it.
