Never had heavy metal audiences encountered a singer with the range of van Giersbergen, and her astonishing, highly evocative voice added a new dimension to the band's sound, becoming the focal point of the sensational one-two punch of the 1995 breakthrough Mandylion and the 1997 masterpiece Nighttime Birds.
Van Giersbergen's mesmerizing voice is in full force on early live performances of Mandylion nuggets "In Motion #1" and "Leaves" and the band displays brute force in a live setting, making for an enthralling contrast.
To see van Giersbergen smile so much within the context of such introspective and moody music makes her performance all the more beguiling (Thom Yorke could learn a lesson or two from the lady), quickly making up for the fact that she remains a rather reserved lead singer onstage.

 PROGRESSIVEWORLD.NET: REVIEWS BY STEPHANIE SOLLOW
Giersbergen has a great voice - a sound that is a mix of Renaissance's Annie Haslem, Natalie Merchant, Sinead O'Connor, and, well...on "Liberty" I thought of the Bangles (though not of Susanna Hoffs).
If there's a criticism, it is that many of the tracks are played at pretty much the same pace, which at times borders on the dirge-like; this is music that requires a great deal of patience.
René Rutten has written or co-written most of the music for the album (Giersbergen alone is responsible for the lyrics), and the approach is very textured and varied, if played most at mid-tempo.

Ground and Sky review - The Gathering - How to Measure a Planet?
The Gathering made their name in progressive metal with their third album, Mandylion, which combined their metal sound with a nicely atmospheric sense and the soaring vocals of Anneke van Giersbergen.
There are hardly any intricate, memorable, or catchy instrumental motives or riffs to be found, and the harmonics and textures aren't interesting enough to hold the songs together either.
To make matters worse, Anneke's singing is less effective than it has been in previous albums, and her lyrics aren't exactly tops either.

Ground and Sky review - The Gathering - Mandylion
The idea of atmospheric symphonic prog-metal seems to breed a lot of watered-down prog "metal" bands whose music is prog without the complexity and metal without the power.
There are a few bands, though, that get it right, and The Gathering is one of them, at least on this release (their third but first with vocalist Anneke van Giersbergen), which is usually regarded as their masterpiece.
The group's selling point, of course, is van Giersbergen's voice, which is clear, assertive, and a far cry from your typical screeching metal vocalists.

To say Anneke van Giersbergen is the glue that holds the band together would be an apt statement.
While every member is definitely important in their own right, it’s Anneke's voice that propelled the band from a once little known death metal group to an underground icon and is also the key element to maintaining the band’s familiar sound.
Home subtly touches that sound, but make no mistake, the main similarity between this album and the band’s previous work is Anneke van Giersbergen, and even she is a bit more subdued here.
