Annelid - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Annelids are triploblastic protostomes with a coelom, closed circulatory system and true segmentation.
The annelid fossil record is sparse, but a few definite forms are known as early as the Cambrian, and there are some signs they were around in the later Precambrian, but the earliest unequivocal annelid fossils are only known from the Cambrian.
Annelids and Mollusks are thus united as the Trochozoa, a taxon more strongly supported by molecular evidence.

The arthropods and their kin have long been considered the closest relatives of the annelids, on account of their common segmented structure, but a number of differences between the two groups suggest this may be convergent evolution.

 Annelid | Biology
Annelids, or true-segmented worms, are members of the animal phylum Annelida, the most complex of all wormlike groups of organisms.
Annelids are commonly found in terrestrial, as well as marine, brackish, estuarine, and freshwater ecosystems worldwide.
Most annelids are free-living, although several species have parasitic, mutualistic, or commensal relationships with other animals, and many species are commonly associated with aquatic and terrestrial plants.

Earthworms and leeches are the familiar annelids for most people, but polychaetes comprise the bulk of the diversity of Annelida and are found in nearly every marine habitat, from intertidal algal mats downwards.
Segments are formed sequentially in annelids and are established during development from growth zones located at the posterior end of the body; so the youngest segment in the body of an annelid is always the most posterior.

 More on Annelid Morphology
Annelids are coelomate animals; they have a fluid-filled body cavity in which the gut and other organs are suspended.
Oligochaetes and polychaetes typically have spacious coeloms; in leeches, the coelom is reduced to a system of narrow canals, and archiannelids may lose the coelom entirely.
The coelom is divided into separate compartments by partitions called septa, which give the "segmented worms" their segmented appearance.

In locomotion, metamerism provides a more effective system for body movement; the body is divided into a consecutive series of motor units that can be controlled separately or in a wave of contraction.
In annelids, the separation of the coelom by transverse septa means that the forces of muscular contraction are not transferred through the organism.
