To get to the hall you have to pass through the portals of the "massy gate" which stood there in Byron’s day, and there is no cause to be afraid of a great handsome staghound which comes bounding towards you in playful curves.

The privately owned Annesley Hall is a grade two listed building, once owned by the powerful Chaworth-Musters family and has connections to the Byron family of nearby Newstead Abbey.
The parish is grouped with the neighbouring parish of Felley (pop 4) to elect a joint parish council.

Annesley Hall eventually became the home of the Chaworth family and upon the disasterous marriage of Mary to Jack Musters of Colwick Hall, the family name became the Chaworth-Musters.
Byron's love for Annesley and Mary must surely be the reason why their ghosts still haunt the ruins of this once great, imposing hall.  Not only their ghosts, but the ghosts of many other families that have lived and died in this building haunt the rooms, corridors and out-buildings to this very day.
Annesley Hall has to be the eeriest DVD in the collection to date, very atmospheric and scary in the daylight let alone the dark.

The Annesley's of Annesley were lords of the manor until the 15th Century.
The hall has associations with the poet Lord Byron, it was the home of his childhood sweet-heart, Mary Ann Chaworth (1785-1832) (however this love was unrequited as she was already engaged to John Musters).
When they were fitting the hall with electricity they found bones underneath the staircase, they were sent off for analysis and were found to be the bones of a pregnant woman.

John Annesley and his lady wife Isobell Annesley had a young daughter called Alice, who became the heiress of Annesley Hall at 6 years old when her father passed away.
His only daughter Mary-Ann Chaworth was left as an heiress to the lands of Annesley, which were subsequently passed to a John Musters, after she got married to him, (who was actually son to the Squire of Colwick).
The 19th century village was demolished and a fire in the main building of Annesley Hall left it a shell of its former self and now it remains derelict although the roof has been rebuilt.

This was itself replaced in the 14th Century with a church, now Annesley Old Church, built near to Annesley Hall (rather outside the current village).
The current Victorian Gothic church was built following the sinking and development of Annesley Colliery, which began in 1865 and led to the establishment of a new centre of local population (New Annesley) about a mile and a half to the east of the 1356 Church.
In 1963, the Parishes of Annesley and Newstead were united, with subsequent incumbents responsible for Annesley, All Saints; Newstead Village, St Mary the Virgin; and Newstead Abbey, St Mary.

Annesley named after a Celtic chieften named "Anna",and Annesley in old english would translate in `lea (meadow) "Annas meadow, Annes lea", this was granted as a reward for fighting at the Battle of Hastings 1066.
Annesley Hall and the surrounding Woodlands have been sold several times without any significant change in the use of the property (attended only by a caretaker).

 COLWICK HALL
All the older buildings disappeared when the present Hall was erected in 1775-6, soon after the coming-of-age of John Musters, (father of the husband of Byron's 'Mary.') There is a famous painting by George Stubbs of John and Sophia Musters riding at Colwick showing the newly built hall in 1777.
This had existed just below the hall since the Saxon period, and was the cause of constant disputes between the owners of Colwick and their neighbours concerning the amount of water that it was allowable to divert from the main river.
In 1896 the Hall was sold to the Nottingham Racecourse Company - the racecourse opened in 1892, the Hall became a public house and the rest of the building were used to accommodate grooms and jockeys.

The first reference to a church at Annesley was in 1156, when the "tithes of Annesley Church" were given to Felly Priory.
A new south aisle was built in the second half of the 14th century and a square tower was added to the west end of the church at about the same time.
Following the opening of the Annesley Colliery in 1868, in an area some distance from the original village known as New Annesley, the decision was taken to build a new church closer to the main population of the village.

This exhibition was mounted to commemorate the centenary of Annesley Hall at Victoria University.
Built in 1903 Annsley Hall was renovated in 1988 and was the first residence built specifically for women in Canada.
On May 30, 31 and June 1, 2003, former women residents of Annesley Hall, Margaret Addison Hall, the Bloor Street residences, 85 Charles Street West, and Wymilwood came from all over the world to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first women's residence in Canada.
