RTE.ie Entertainment - French director Vadim dies
The French film director Roger Vadim, who discovered Brigitte Bardot and was linked to some of the world's most beautiful women, has died of cancer aged 72.
Vadim made his debut as a director in 1956 with the then outrageous 'And God Created Woman', which launched the career of his teenage wife, Brigitte Bardot.
Vadim fathered a son with Catherine Deneuve, appeared in several films himself and was married to another actress, Marie-Christine Barrault, at the time of his death.

 The Films of Roger Vadim
Vadim's rendition is a so thoroughly immersed in ultra-chic, New Wave aesthetics that the characters are transformed from ruthless, Michiavellian into a gallery of disaffected, highly photogenic French actors prancing through the Alpine scenery, occasionally bursting into hysterical fits when they're not rolling around naked by the fireplace.
For all Vadim's liberties with the novel, his version is a highly memorable riff on familiar territory and offers a least one highly satisfying improvement in the form of Juliette's comeuppance; we wouldn't dream of spoiling it, but the final moments are appropriately sadistic and far more scalding than getting publicly booed at the opera.
Vadim's camera often sets up actors at opposing ends of the frame, and every inch is necessary to appreciate even the simplest dialogue scene.

Les Liaisons Dangereuses on DVD - MovieWeb
Roger Vadim takes his patented obsessions with beauty and the tawdry, destructive behavior that inevitably accompanies it to the French literary classic LES LIAISONS DANGEREUSES, Choderlos de Laclos's scathing 18th-century epistolary novel.
When Valmont’s latest obsession, Marianne (played by Vadim’s wife, Annette), begins to capture his heart, the game is up and Juliette seeks revenge, bringing destruction and disaster in her wake.
Vadim’s transposition of the casual cruelties and excruciatingly subtle protocols of 18th-century French court life is uncannily accurate, and the director brings themes developed in his earlier masterpiece, AND GOD CREATED WOMAN, to a sophisticated crescendo of visual and psychological eroticism, romance, and ennui.

 Chicago Reader Movie Review
Vadim used a Swiss ski resort and jazz by Thelonious Monk and others on his sound track like ambient wallpaper, the same way Frears and Forman threw period decor and costumes in our faces--as a way of telling us that this is not only art, but high-priced goods.
But Sebastian is initially more interested in pursuing another virgin, Annette Hargrove (Reese Witherspoon), who's just published an article in Seventeen magazine declaring that she won't have sex before marriage and whose father has coincidentally just become the school's headmaster.
By the time Sebastian starts cruising Annette, her principled virtue has come to seem as admirable and as potent, hence as sexy, as Kathryn's amorality--which offers at least a whiff of the novel's moral and erotic dynamics.

Most of Vadim's films are laughed at today and people tend to throw this one in with the rest, which is a mistake.
Chaderlos de Laclos' sensibility is very close to what Vadim imagined himself to be at the time, or at least was striving for, before he sold-out and became a completely insignificant director.
Vadim transposes the story to a contemporary setting of 1960s France and ski resorts for the upper classes, and best of all, puts a Thelonious Monk jazz soundtrack on throughout, with Kenny Dorham and other fl jazz players in the film's party scenes throughout.

Comment: Vadim walked a very thin line at a time when it was very unconventional to, 'push the envelope' as one might say.
But, push the envelope hi did, and he erased the line with his cinematic genius and lust for life, which he brought to the screen as no one had ever dared to do before.
If you are a student of cinema, Vadim will give you a fellowship on the artistry of filming.

filmcritic.com Movie Review: Les Liaisons Dangereuses
Roger Vadim, who showed a remarkable lack of self-restraint in films like Barbarella and Don Juan (or If Don Juan Were a Woman), was far more muted in his jazz-infused updating of Dangerous Liaisons, set in then-modern-day Paris but keeping the guts of the story nearly intact.
In Vadim's rendition, Valmont (Gérard Philipe) is married to Juliette de Merteuil (Jeanne Moreau), and together they get their kicks by preying on the weaknesses of other high-society types.
Juliette sets her sights on Cecile (Jeanne Valérie), soon to be married to someone who has crossed her in the past, and sets Vamont onto turning the innocent (but naive and manipulatable) girl into a sexpot-in-training.

This is quite a satisfying film, although it is clearly not in the league of Vadim’s New Wave contemporaries, such as Truffaut or Godard.
Whilst not as grand as Stephen Frears’ 1988 film of the same name, Vadim’s Les liaisons dangereuses has much to commend it and is worthy of a fresh reappraisal.

 ‘Les Liaisons Dangereuses’ (NR)
Twenty-nine years before British director Stephen Frears's recent wig-and-powdered "Dangerous Liaisons," with Glenn Close, John Malkovich and Michelle Pfeiffer, there was "Les Liaisons Dangereuses," a rompy French version directed by Roger Vadim, who was just over a dangerous liaison himself with Brigitte Bardot.
Updating Choderlos de Laclos' novel (written 177 years before that), Vadim set the bedroom intrigue against a Parisian eve-of-the-'60s world of jazz and sexual permissiveness, cast French siren Jeanne Moreau as predatory Juliette (the Close role in Frears's film) and gave his wife Annette Vadim the innocent-prey role (later played by Pfeiffer).
To watch the movie, though, is still fabulous -- not because it's a Great Film -- but because it bounces along as if it were a great film.

Blood and Roses (1960) (Et Mourir de Plaisir)
Opposing the rich, flamboyance of Hammer’s treatment, Vadim’s vampirism is a lot more soft-focus and softcore in intent.
In fact there is very little vampirism going on altogether — there is a ludicrously tame scene where Annette Vadim pursues a servant girl, which just fades out just as Vadim closes in on her.
The atmosphere Vadim creates is occasionally compulsive - there are undeniably striking shots, like the lake lit up by fireworks, and in particular the surrealistic fevre dream that turns fl-and-white with bodies swimming upside down outside French windows and an operation where the surgeon’s gloves are all tinted blood red.

The innocence and lack of guile which the preyed-upon characters must embody is not convincingly available in a contemporary setting and neither, therefore, is the cruelty which exploits those qualities; and Annette Vadim's flight into madness would surely have lacked conviction even in 1782, when de Laclos was writing.
Though this is the weakest of the three adaptations, it does have in Moreau and Philipe the choicest of scheming monsters.
