Annie Raines - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Annie Raines, born near Boston, Massachusetts, July 3, 1969, took up harmonica at age 17.
While working regularly on the regional blues circuit, Annie taught harmonica and began developing her own style within the blues tradition.
Fast becoming one of the most sought-after harmonica players in New England, she had earned a reputation for playing with energy, soulfulness and taste, but she was ready to take her musical education to a deeper level.

While her friends were listening to Pink Floyd, Annie was enthralled by the sounds of the Muddy Waters Band, and particularly drawn to the blues harmonica playing of Little Walter Jacobs, Big Walter Horton and Sonny Boy Williamson.
Annie began to play gigs at local Boston area clubs, and later traveled to Chicago where she met and played with Pinetop Perkins, Louis Myers, and James Cotton.
Paul and Annie both base their ensemble playing style on close communication, listening keenly to the other players to support rather than overshadow them, and their duo work here is marked by the sensitive interplay that has become so central to their performances.

Of the new self-penned songs by Rishell and Raines, "Got To Fly" fits nicely in beside the old country blues, while "Ol' Heartbreak" represents a fatter blues style with Rishell on electric and Raines on a miked harmonica, reminiscent of Little Walter.
In each case Annie and Paul accurately capture the original blues vision, one that appears deceptively simple on the surface yet harbors the basic elements of the human condition.
Just before I spoke with Rishell and Raines they were the subject of a chat-line call where Compuserve subscribers asked them questions about their music.

Raines was a wayfaring musical soul when the harmonica took over her life in 1986, at age 17.
But Raines says it wasn't until she hooked up with Rishell about five years ago that she earned the "right to Walter-ize," as she puts it, or blow from the trick bag developed by Chicago harmonica heavies Little Walter Jacobs and Big Walter Horton.
Both Raines and Rishell say they've drawn inspiration for I Want You To Know from Rishell's late wife, Leslie, who died of cancer last summer as they were recording.

Raines: One of the things we really try to give people with all of our albums is a sense of place, and I think we’re also really trying to give ourselves that.
We hope that with the process of making the album and being able to go out on the road, that we’ll be able to inherit that sense of place back from the people we’re giving it to just by going out to play different towns and surveying the landscape.
Rishell: I heard Annie play with Shirley Lewis, and liked the fact that she didn’t play harmonica like 99.9 percent of the people who play harmonica play it — which is, they try to make everything sound like Chicago blues.

Annie Raines was born near Boston, Massachusetts on July 3rd 1969.
As with Paul Rishell some twenty years earlier, the blues hit Annie so hard she just had to follow, and she dropped out of college halfway through her Freshman year to become one of the first serious female blues harmonica players in the country.
Between them Raines and Rishell cover so much instrumental territory-on this CD alone they cover the entire spectrum of electric and acoustic blues guitar styles, about five generations' worth of diatonic and chromatic harmonica techniques, mandolin, piano, organ, and zither-that they constitute a blues orchestra on four legs.

I was not yet through my first listening when I found myself in the grip of a sweet affliction, that musical condition when one listens exclusively and obsessively to a song or album, unable, apparently, to satisfy the appetite for it.
Like "Swear To Tell The Truth," the previous album on Tone-Cool/Rounder by Paul and Annie, this is a mixture of accoustic and electric blues (with Ronnie Earl in a supporting role); unlike the earlier one this one includes three electric duets (a minimalist electric blues band), and three songs that feature Little Annie on vocals.
Annie's sound is perfect -- her tone is perfect, her idioms for the genre are absolutely true, and her execution can only be called flawless.
