Annie M. Sprinkle (born Ellen F. Steinberg July 23, 1954 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) was a prostitute, stripper, porn film star, cable television host, porn magazine editor and writer, and sex film producer.
As the first porn star to earn a Ph.D., Sprinkle received her Ph.D. in Human Sexuality from the Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality in San Francisco, CA.

Biography of Annie Sprinkle   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Annie's genuinely candid use of sexually explicit material is not the least bit sensationalist, instead she educates audiences about the various aspects of women's sexuality and potential by demystifying female anatomy.
Annie Sprinkle's self-conscious exhibitionism rejects that idea of connotation by blatantly displaying an enlightened caricature of "to-be-looked-at-ness" that exudes her prerogative to manipulate the conveyed representation.
Annie is an acting subject, not an objectified passive recipient of the gaze, for she is the one wielding the power.

That Annie Sprinkle is one of the most well-known and best-loved figures in pornography is no accident — for over 25 years she’s broken new ground and pushed the edges of erotic representation.
Annie’s "Sprinkle Salons" in her New York apartment were graced by the likes of Fakir Musafar, Lydia Lunch, artist H.R. Giger, happy hooker Xaviera Hollander, Tiny Tim, and members of the Hell’s Angels.
Annie says she "wants to delight, not shock." Maybe this is why her work has such a friendly feel: She would rather reach out, embrace, and educate the world — not scare it off.
