The area of Anniesland is not known for its scenery or architecture, but, as someone who has spent most of his life there, I have always found that it is the people who make the difference.
The people of Anniesland have many different backgrounds and social standards, but whether they come from Drumchapel, Yoker, Knightswood, Blairdardie, Anniesland, Kelvindale or Jordanhill, I shall be honoured to represent them.
Unemployment in Anniesland is higher than the national average, but, thanks to the present Government, it has fallen by nearly 14 per cent.

Donald Dewar, a leading figure in Scottish Labour politics, had in 1999 been elected to the Scottish Parliament where he had become First Minister of the Scottish Executive, but he retained his seat in the Parliament of the United Kingdom intending to stand down at the next general election.
The fall would not have been fatal had he not been on warfarin after suffering a heart attack earlier that year.
Both elections were held on the same day, and polling day was set for November 23.

The Anniesland Memorial Hall at Anniesland Cross is a standing monument of their good work.
During the process of sinking one of the coal pits one of the Managers from Airdrie District observed a ribbed brownish stone among the debris and on closer examination this was found to be a valuable ironstone.
With the decline of the mines came the introduction of the School boards, the speculative builder and annexation to Glasgow, thus Jordanhill was converted from a rural to a suburban and city area, the name Anniesland substituted for Skaterigg and Claythorne and the whole character of the district altered.

Glasgow Anniesland is the successor to the Glasgow Garscadden seat which was itself created in 1974 from Scotstoun.
As in the rest of Scotland, the swing from Labour to the SNP was massive in some Glasgow constituencies: 16.8 % in Baillieston, 16.3 % in Shettleston, 14.6 % in Maryhill, 12.1 % in Pollok and 11.2 % in Maryhill.
While it was expected that Labour would hold on to both Anniesland seats, what was not expected was the size of their majorities.
