Topic: Anno Lucis

Anno Mundi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Anno Mundi (AM, "in the year of the world") refers to a Calendar era counting from the creation of the world.
Related to this is the Anno Lucis of Freemasonry, which adds 4000 years to the AD date, and the Julian day number, counting the days that have elapsed since noon Greenwich Mean Time (UT or TT) on Monday, January 1, 4713 BC.
The date inferred from the Roman Martyrology [1] is 25 March 5198 BC.

 The Freemason
The ordinary calendar year, the year of the "vulgar era" is reckoned from the birth of Christ, and we speak of it as being "AD", or Anno Domini, meaning "In the Year of Our Lord." Craft Freemasonry officially uses that calendar plus its own "Anno Lucis", meaning "In the Year of Light", abbreviated as "AL".
Anno Lucis is " The Year Of Masonry," and is mentioned in the Constitutions of 1723 by Anderson, who arrived at it by adding to the calendar year 4000, representing the number of years once supposed to have elapsed since the beginning of the world.
The last name means "In the Year of the Discovery" and alludes to the year in which Zerubbabel began to build the second temple, 530B.C; accordingly the year ‘AL’ is found by adding 530 to the ordinary calendar year.

 Anno Lucis
According to the Encyclopaedia Britannica, the phrase ''Anno Mundi'' came into popular use about the 9th century A.D. The phrase 'Year of Masonry' was also used occasionally by the premier Grand Lodge in their Minutes, for example in the Minutes dated 6 and 27 December 1729.
The word 'Lucis' is found occasionally in Royal Arch manuscripts that were probably written in the latter part of the 18th century.
No 'Anno Lucls'- and indeed no 'A. As for the premier Grand Lodge and the Grand Lodge of the Antients, we have seen that they used both the phrase 'in the Year of Masonry' and the abbreviation 'A.L.' but not 'Anno Lucis'.

The Masonic Manual by Robert Macoy - Masonic Calendar
Masons of the York rite begin the year on the first January, but in the French rite it commences on the first of March, and instead of the month receiving their usual names, they are designated numerically.
Inv.·., that is, Anno Inventionis, or, in the year of the Discovery, 2382.
Royal and Select Masters very often make use of the common Masonic date, Anno Lucis, but properly they should date from the year in which Solomon's Temple was completed and their style would then be, Anno Depositionis, or, in the Year of the Deposit, and they would date the present year as 2852.

 Anno_Lucis
The Masonic calendar traditionally dated from 4004 BCE; the creation of the universe, Anno Mundi, as computed by Bishop Ussher in 1650-54 and stated in the margins of older printings of the Authorized King James Bible.
This was replaced in Masonic documents by the year of light, Anno Lucis, which dates from 4000 BCE.
There is no Masonic significance to either date, other than a desire by early Masonic writers to create as ancient a lineage for Freemasonry as their imaginations would allow.

The letters “Anno Lat” were first discovered on a set of three jewels presented in 1732 to Dr. Richard Rawlinson of Castle Lodge.
The first masonic reference to “Anno Lucis” however was not made until 1772 when Preston in his tome, “Illustrations of Masonry” referred to a lodge banqueting hall door which bore an inscription which included the date “Anno Lucis 5765”.
No “Anno Lucis”- and indeed no “A. Nevertheless, with a little imagination, the modern interpretation of “AL” and “An Lat” (ie “the Year of Masonic Light” versus “the Year of Masons”) are broadly similar.

Although have been a number of Masonic dating systems, the most familiar to Craft Freemasons will be Anno Lucis (A.L.), which is the system that appears on certificates.
Anno Lucis (the year of light) is based on a chronology that puts the year of creation as 4,004 B.C. and is traditionally derived by adding 4,000 to the year in question.
For example 1717 A.D. the year Grand Lodge was formed would become 5717 A.L., and 2003 would become 6003 A.L. The system was not exclusive to Freemasons having been designed by an Irish cleric James Ussher (1581-1656) many years before the formation of Grand Lodge in 1717.

The Feast of Tabernacles also commemorates the ceremonies of the completion and dedication of King Solomon’s Temple, which was begun in the year 2992 Anno Lucis, and finished in a little more than seven years.
In the year 3001 Anno Lucis, six months after its completion, in the month of Tishri, the seventh month of the Jewish sacred year, the Temple was dedicated with reverential ceremonies to the one Living and True God.
That these ceremonies would reach the highest religious significance, King Solomon postponed the dedication until the Feast of Tabernacles, the 15th day of Tishri, a day he well knew would bring every zealous Jew to Jerusalem.
