The character of The Vicar of Bray appears in a traditional English folk song with that title.
The eponymous vicar was the clergyman of the parish of Bray on Thames, Berkshire.
The lyrics recount his adaptability (some would say amorality) in embracing whichever form of liturgy, Protestant or Catholic, was favoured by the monarch of the day in order to retain his position.

"The Vicar of Bray" is a satirical song recounting the career of the Vicar of Bray and his contortions of principle in order to retain his ecclesiastic office despite the changes in the Established Church through the course of several English monarchs.
This is the gist of the song's satire: the Vicar of Bray accommodated his beliefs to those of the current ruler, in order to retain his ecclesiastic office.
The Vicar of Bray is of the latter camp.

The Vicar of Bray - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Vicar of Bray is a comic opera by Sydney Grundy and Edward Solomon, which opened at the Globe Theatre, in London, on July 22, 1882, for a run of 69 performances.
The opera is based on the character described in a satirical 18th century English folk song The Vicar of Bray, as well as on The History of Sandford and Merton, a series of 18th century moral tales.
In the song, the eponymous vicar was the clergyman of the parish of Bray-on-Thames, Berkshire.

The very metropolis of this lyric realm was Mitylene of Lesbos, where, amid the myrtle groves and temples, the sunlit silver of the fountains, the hyacinth gardens by a soft blue sea, Beauty and Love in their young warmth could fuse the most rigid forms to fluency.
Here Sappho was the acknowledged queen of song--revered, studied, imitated, served, adored by a little court of attendants and disciples, loved and hymned by Alcaeus, and acclaimed by her fellow craftsmen throughout Greece as the wonder of her age.
Carman's method, apparently, has been to imagine each lost lyric as discovered, and then to translate it; for the indefinable flavour of the translation is maintained throughout, though accompanied by the fluidity and freedom of purely original work.
