List of popes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
There is no official list of popes, but the Annuario pontificio, published every year by the Vatican, contain a list that is generally considered to be the most authoritative.
A man elected in 752 and dead three days after was listed on this list as Stephen II, but he has been erased since the 1961 edition.
That would make a list of 266 popes, but other choices of the Annuario pontificio are far most questionable.

 March 18 News: (55news1.htm)
VATICAN (CWN) -- The Annuario Pontificio, the annual directory of the worldwide Catholic Church, was formally presented to Pope John Paul II yesterday morning.
This year's edition of the Annuario includes a listing of the latest members of the College of Cardinals, who were elevated to that rank by the Pope on February 21.
The Annuario lists all of the 166 governments which enjoy full diplomatic relations with the Holy See, including those which established such ties during the past year: Angola, Guyana, and Libya.

His pontificate began during the reign of Hadrian, during which he witnessed the persecution of Christians, and ended during the reign of Antoninus Pius.
The Vatican's "Annuario Pontificio" says that he was Greek by birth, and reigned from 127 or 128 to 137 or 138.
The tradition of Christmas midnight masses, the celebration of Easter on Sundays, the keeping of a seven-week Lent before Easter and the singing of the Gloria are usually attributed to his pontificate, but many historians doubt that such attributions are accurate.

 Homiletic & Pastoral Review - June, 2001
The 1999 edition of Annuario Pontificio, an annual directory published by the Holy See, indicates there are 228 Institutes of Consecrated Life (to include 216 religious and 12 secular institutes) and 30 Societies of Apostolic Life.
Annuario Pontificio also indicates that 16 communities grew by between 20 and 38 percent and another 25 increased by between 1 and 18 percent.
Since it also identifies 25 communities that did not exist in 1981, this means that 33 percent (or 82) of the religious communities for men increased their memberships between 1981 and 1999.

The (Iglesia Ni Cristo/Church of Christ) Doctrines
Vatican, Jun. 23 (CWNews.com) - The latest edition of the Annuario Pontificio, the statistical directory of the worldwide Catholic Church, shows the Catholic population stable, with some vigorous growth in Africa and Asia, but erosion in Europe and North America.
The latest Annuario, a 500-page volume with figures for each diocese and religious order in the world, shows that as of December 31, 2001, there were 4,649 bishops in the world; 405,067 priests; 29,204 deacons; 54,970 monks; 792,317 nuns; 139,078 lay missionaries; and 2,813,252 catechists.
The Annuario clearly illustrates the shortage in priestly vocations.
