WORLDTWITCH - Carlos Yamashita, Anodorhynchus macaws as followers of extinct megafauna: an hypothesis
The mesocarp of the fruits is commonly discarded; Anodorhynchus macaws are easy to detect from the piles of perfectly cracked palm nuts that accumulate under palm trees, tall trees used as perches and roosting stone ledges.
The most logical explanation for the behavior of the Anodorhynchus, following cattle herds and searching palm nuts on the ground is that this is a primitive conservative behavior, that ceased to occur after the extinction of the megaherbivores.
The linkage between Anodorhynchus Macaws and the palm nuts and the extinction of the Glaucous Macaw.

Macaws are large colorful parrots, classified into six of the many Psittacidae genera: Ara, Anodorhynchus, Cyanopsitta, Propyrrhura, Orthopsittaca, and Diopsittaca.
Other sub-bondings also take place and most macaws that are subjected to non-aggressive behavior (i.e love) will trust most humans and can be handled even by strangers if someone familiar is within eyeshot of the bird.

Anodorhynchus macaws as followers of extinct megafauna: an hypothesis
The BBC documentary "Who is talking?", made in the Central Africa Republic showed flocks of thousands of Grey Parrots (Psittacus erythacus) among elephant herds Loxodonta africana at a salt-lick, picking seeds and seedlings from the enormous dung piles accumulated at the site (May 1996).
The large parrot concentrations on salt licks could be derived somehow of ancestral use of razed gaps produced by extinct megafauna herds.

Lear’s illustrations were reproduced lithographically and published in folio format for subscribers between 1830 and 32 as Illustrations of the Family of Psittacidae, or Parrots.
It was immediately compared to the work of John Audubon, and the twenty-year old Lear was briefly fêted and made an Associate of the Linnean Society (two parrots now bear Lear’s name: Lapochroa leari, Lear’s cockatoo, and Anodorhynchus leari, Lear’s macaw).
In 1832 the president of the Zoological Society, Lord Stanley, heir to the Earldom of Derby, invited Lear to his family estate of Knowsley (near Liverpool) to make drawings of the animals in his private menagerie.
