Anolis that turned from green to brown with handling showed an increase in oxygen uptake, but an association between this color shift and total body lactate level was not detected.
Lactate levels of the individuals of a pair were positively correlated with one another; the lactate concentrations of lizards placed into occupied metabolic chambers were correlated with the difference in body mass of the pair.

The Invader of the Month: The Brown Anole, Anolis sagrei
The look-alike most deserving of attention is the native green anole, Anolis carolinensis Voigt 1832, found throughout the southeastern United States and the sole Anolis lizard native to North America north of Mexico (Conant and Collins 1991).
Less obvious to the casual observer is their expanded toe-pads which, like those of gecko lizards, help anoles cling to even the smoothest of surfaces, and the extent of which varies with their degree of arboreality.
The brown anole (Anolis sagrei) is a medium-sized, fairly robust, "trunk-ground" anole, and like many others of this ecomorph, are runners and jumpers with relatively long toes and reduced toe-pad surface areas.

Populations of the lizard Anolis sagrei, introduced onto small islands from a nearby source, differentiated from each other rapidly over a 10–14-year period.
In addition to providing a glimpse of adaptive dynamics in one of the most extensive generic radiations on earth, the results lend support to the general argument that environment determines the evolution of morphology.

(1999) that concluded the deep branches characteristic of Anolis phylogeny in their study reflected early and rapid diversification.
That may well explain part of the complexity of anole evolution, but it cannot explain all of the inter- and intra-island evolution that has occurred in the Caribbean since the Miocene.
Anolis is a long-lived genus with a high degree of specific diversity, a confusing amount of inter- and intra-specific morphological variability and homoplasy, but a low level of morphological disparity.

They begin by observing the body structures and habitat of different species, then plot this data on a map of the islands to look for patterns in their distribution.

A largely unresolved question in evolutionary ecology concerns whether evolutionary radiations occur in the same manner in different geographical regions with similar environmental conditions (i.e., “replicate evolution”).
We are currently examining whether lizards of the Genus Anolis that have invaded small, remote, Pacific islands have evolved the same set of phenotypes and habitat characteristics as Anolis species that occupy Caribbean islands.
a) We quantified differences in morphology, habitat use, and performance (bite force and clinging ability) in a population of Anolis carolinensis in both an urban environment and an undisturbed, high-predation environment in Louisiana, LA. This article was published in BJLS in 2005.
