A NEW ANOMALOSCOPE   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-28)
Spectral anomaloscopes on the basis of Lord Rayleigh's match are the standard for classifying congenital red-green color deficiencies.
One reason is the intricate handling of the instrument which led to the developement of a new anomaloscope with an improved testing procedure.
Discussion: Further investigation is necessary to validate (he efficiency of this new anomaloscope in the early diagnosis and follow-up of acquired color vision deficiencies caused by maculopathies.

Anomaloscope colour matching (i.e., matching a spectral yellow with a mixture of red and green lights) and chromatic discrimination thresholds are the two most commonly used methods for assessing colour deficiency and loss of chromatic sensitivity.
The purpose of this study was to examine the factors that cause variability in such measurements and to establish how performance on the anomaloscope correlates with the subject’s loss of chromatic sensitivity.
Examination of model parameters reveals the limitations of anomaloscope matches and explains, at least in part, why the parameters of the yellow match are not a good measure of the subject’s ability to discriminate small colour differences.

 Indmedica - Medico-Legal Update
Anomaloscopes: are optical instruments in which the observer must manipulate stimulus control knobs to match two colored fields in color and brightness.
While the anomaloscope remains the only clinical method for precise diagnosis of the presumed genetic entities, many tests have been devised for quick, inexpensive and efficient screening of the color-defective population.
The anomaloscope is the only clinical instrument for diagnosis and classification of the presumed genetic entities of dichromacy and to both simple and extreme anomalous trichromacy as defined by Franceschetti.

The anomaloscope is an instrument used in the diagnosis of red-green deficiencies.
A mixture field composed of red and green wavelengths is presented in the top half of the display, the bottom half of the test field is yellow.
A major advantage of the Nagal anomaloscope is that it can distinguish between dichromatic and anomalous trichromatic vision by measuring the balance of red and green wavelengths in the mixture field.

Anomaloscope testing revealed normal matching ranges, which indicates the presence of long- and middle-wave cones of normal spectral sensitivity and normal optical density.
The slightly elevated colour discrimination thresholds that were detected are compatible with a reduction in cone numbers.

Introduction: A comparison of the results obtained with the Nagel anomaloscope and the Holmes-Wright Type A, Spectrolux, and Beyne aviation color vision lanterns was undertaken.
Of the normal trichromats, 12 failed the anomaloscope and 12 failed the Beyne lantern.
Since the flight safety consequences of the current situation cannot be ignored, the development of a less variable technique for color vision assessment that is accepted internationally, allied with a better understanding of color vision requirements, is needed.

The range of Falant error scores was continuous with no demarkation between the criteria for pass and fail.
It was not possible to identify anomalous trichromats likely to pass the Falant from the size of the anomaloscope matching range or from the results of Farnsworth-Munsell tests.
Conclusions: People with severe red-green color deficiency fail the Falant, but neither the type nor the severity of color deficiency can be determined either from the qualitative results or from the error score.

The purpose of this investigation was to examine the factors that cause changes in chromatic sensitivity in order to explain the inherent variability within normal trichromats and the existence of unusual extreme anomaloscope matches.
We measured and compared colour discrimination thresholds and Nagel anomaloscope matches in a large number of “normal” trichromats and a group of colour deficient observers.
Genetic analysis was also carried out in a subgroup of subjects to determine the spectral separation between the L and M pigments.

Until recently, the only truly sensitive diagnostic tests of color vision were the Farnsworth-Munsell 100 Hue test and the anomaloscope.
Based on the same principles as the anomaloscope, these tests are accurate, diagnostic, and reimbursable (CPT Code: 92283).
Both these tests take about one minute to administer and score, and can be used with children as young as 4 years old.

Evaluation of a New Color Vision Test
A battery of color vision tests including the Ishihara, Panel D-15, and the anomaloscope were used for the diagnosis and classification of color deficiency.
The problem reported when using standard tests like the D-15, AO HRR, Ishihara Test, Dvorine Plates, and Anomaloscope to test mentally handicapped patients was a high level of false-positives (to many patients incorrectly identified as color deficient).
The primary difficulty for each of these color vision tests with mentally handicapped patients was trouble understanding the task required (e.g., understanding how to arrange the colored caps in the D-15 test).

When a person with normal color vision views the “match” made by a patient with abnormal color vision, a deficit in either red or green color vision is readily apparent.
