Anomie - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Anomie is remarkably common when the surrounding society has undergone significant changes in economic fortunes, whether for good or for worse, and more generally when there is a significant discrepancy between the ideological theories and values commonly professed and the practice of everyday life.
The word, which can also be spelled anomy, has also been used to apply to societies or groups of people within a society, who suffer from chaos due to lack of commonly recognized explicit or implicit rules of good conduct, or worse, to the reign of rules promoting isolation or even predation rather than cooperation.
Anomy as a social disorder is not to be confused with anarchy.

The contemporary English understanding of the word Anomie differs from how the term was originally defined and used by Greeks and tends to become a synonym of the word Αναρχία (see Anarchy).
The nineteenth century French pioneer sociologist Emile Durkheim used this word in his book outlining the causes of suicide, to describe a condition or malaise in individuals, characterized by an absence or diminution of standards or values, and an associated feeling of alienation and purposelessness.
The protagonist of Albert Camus's The Stranger is an example from literature of a sufferer of anomie.

In a testament to the crystal-clear songwriting and sheer sonic force of the band, this quality pulled the legendary Todd Rundgren to the boards and this collaboration has yielded a collection of melodic pop-rock gems more than worthy of the occasion.

Splender is enthused with the spirit of radio-friendly rock music, totally devoid of the annoying irony and sarcasm that infects much of modern rock, yet steadfastly smart enough and totally informed enough that the band can make simultaneously commercial and heavy rock music that shakes your foundations while still lighting a fire in your skull.

Las Vegas SUN: Sound Check -- Geoff Carter: Smart, savvy grooves found on 'Anomie and Bonhomie'
Perhaps that's part of the reason that the follow-up to "Provision," "Anomie and Bonhomie," wouldn't be released until a decade after everyone had forgotten Scritti completely.
"Anomie and Bonhomie" begins with "Umm," a four-minute, guitar-and-rap-driven cooker that establishes the record's reason for being; it allows Green to indulge his new love for Brooklyn hip-hop and lo-fi garage rock -- halfway between Pavement and Wyclef Jean.
The vocal of "Tinseltown to the Boogiedown," a duet between Mos Def and Majors, allows the rap to dominate the number; Green's vocals are restricted to a brief, recurring chorus.

Alienation, Anomie, and Combat Effectiveness   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-09)
While alienation has always been a part of man's psyche in that individuals commonly withdraw separate themselves or their affection from objects or positions of former attachment, anomie or the state of normlessness or lawlessness is a less pervasive characteristic of man, the social animal.
The opposite of societal anomie is another grid displaying the sharing of norms and values by and within the community.
Furthermore, mildly anomie individuals express strong needs for reinforcement of their connections to "real things." These two strains were expressed in various "back to nature" movements of the sixties.

No, the Skunkers' aspirations aren't nearly that high, but this band definitely likes to paint itself as the dark side of Brit-rock, taking over where the ambivalent anomie of Blur and Oasis leave off.
Occasionally, bassist Cass Lewis and guitarist Ace pull the band into a rave-up, but at heart this is no punk band.
These songs are about race, religion and isolation, but despite their varied backgrounds, the Skunkers don't dig too deep with lines like "Don't you lecturize me" or "I don't want your charity keeping me down" neatly summing up entire songs.

Compare Prices and Read Reviews on Anomie & Bonhomie - Scritti Politti at Epinions.com
Theirs was a singular combination of perky synth-pop, soulful R&B balladeering, and inventive flirtations with reggae, dub and hip-hop, along with some of the strangest lyrics to hit the radio since Steely Dan, packed to overflowing with twenty-dollar vocabulary and references to obscure literary works.
Originally a loosely structured band, but eventually turning into a mostly-one-man-show led by a man called Green (Gartside - he of the blond boy-band looks, the effeminate-but-not-flamboyant tenor, and the MENSA qualifying IQ), they may have been great, but they were never prolific.
Their first singles were released by the British indie Rough Trade Records in 1979, but it wasn't until 1982 that they released their first proper album "Songs to Remember." They would only record three albums, releasing them three years apart from each other, long before such 'tween-album intervals were fashionable.

Steeltown, the band's sturdy 1984 LP, failed to grip listeners as strongly as The Crossing did; plans for touring in the United States were ill-timed; and it's taken the band nearly two years to release The Seer, its third album and possibly its strongest effort to date.
All the elements of Big Country's distinctive sound remain – the surging dual riffs and elegant E-bow flights of Stuart Adamson and Bruce Watson's guitars; the yearning strain in Adamson's vocals; the ballast of bassist Tony Butler and drummer Mark Brzezicki's solid bottom.
The open-ended lyricism of that track's closing instrumental passage evokes the quality of Big Country's hopes this time out – as well as the scope of their potential success if this LP gets the exposure it deserves.
