Topic: Anonymity

In the News (Sat 25 May 13)

Anonymity - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Anonymity is a result of not having identifying characteristics (such as a name or description of physical appearance) disclosed.
In some cases, anonymity is reached unintentionally, as is often the case with victims of crimes or war battles, when a body is discovered in such a state that the physical features used to identify someone are no longer present.
Anonymity may reduce the accountability one perceives to have for his actions, and removes the impact these actions might otherwise have on his reputation.

The Open Society Paradox: Anonymity Archives   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Anonymizer, which offers a service to surf the Internet anonymously, has just published a press release on their company's growth.
Anonymity through their service is accomplished by routing web page requests through their servers which keeps an individual's IP address hidden from web sites.
Of course, traceable anonymity such as the most simple case of using a psuedonym on the Internet to employing the services of a company like Anonymizer, is beneficial in that it allows individuals some privacy and free speech protections while allowing authorities to track down a suspect when a law is broken or security threatened.

THE IMPACT OF ANONYMITY ON DISINHIBITIVE BEHAVIOR THROUGH COMPUTER-MEDIATED COMMUNICATION
A user’s perceived anonymity is the ability to remain unaccountable within his or her social environment for actions and dialogue, both legally and socially.
Users may often perceive that they are anonymous when they are not, may find a deeply personal attachment to a label so that it becomes part of their own personality, or may be far less protected from repercussions than they perceive.
By allowing such "tagged" individuals to treat the medium as different levels of anonymity (by informing the poster before she posts of her level of anonymity), the posters are then assured of being cognizant of their anonymity level when posting.

 Daily Blague: Anonymity
I can think of a not-anonymous blog whose author is so discreet that it is impossible to draw inferences about his romantic life.
Anonymity itself suggests that there is a reason, above and beyond ordinary discretion, for anonymity.
In an exchange about a well-known anonymous blogger who has recently written about transferring her affections, a friend told me that she is reluctant to post very much about her boyfriend for exactly this reason.

 Anonymity and pseudonymity in cyberspace:

Anonymous remailers permit users to send e-mail to a central address where all identifying information is stripped and the original text is then retransmitted to the desired destination.
Anonymity and pseudonymity make law enforcement difficult enough, but these difficulties are exacerbated by the jurisdictional problems caused by a thoroughly decentralised communications medium like the Internet; "[W]ho should be setting the rules that apply to this new global medium?" (Post and Johnson, 1997).

There is considerable contention about the social desirability of network anonymity schemes, with some people envisioning a free-thinking realm where ideas are decoupled from the excess baggage of reputation and others arguing against the very same schemes, since they also decouple offensive expression from the responsibility for its dissemination.
Local anonymity is immune to this problem, since communication streams that originate at an anonymous coalition are not identifiably anonymous, and so blocking one coalition has no effect on any others.
