Anonymous meshes benefit from large communities of users (anonymity of the crowd), and the P2P community is possibly one of the largest "crowds" on the Internet (some estimates put Bit Torrent at 1/3 of all the traffic on the Internet at the end of 2004).

Anonymity is not a boolean - we are not trying to make something "perfectly anonymous", but instead are working at making attacks more and more expensive to mount.
I2P alone is what could be called a "low latency mix network", and there are limits to the anonymity offered by such a system, but the applications on top of I2P, such as Syndie, I2P mail, and I2PSnark extend it to offer both additional functionality and protection.

I think that one of the lessons learned early on when anonymous P2P nets began to be developed, was that performance decreased exponentially as additional layers of privacy and anonymity were implemented.
Using the Napster example again, I doubt that we'd be seeing P2P nets that are even a fraction of their current size, had the earlier method of centralized sharing remained accessible.
