Anopheles - Enpsychlopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Anopheles is a genus of mosquito ( Culicidae).
Anopheles gambiae is one of the best known, because of its predominant role in the transmission of the most dangerous malaria tropica ( Plasmodium falciparum).
Anopheles also serves as the vector for canine heart worm Dirofilaria immitis, the Filariidae Wuchereria bancrofti and Brugia malayi, and viruses like the one who is the cause for O'nyong-nyong-Fever.

Of the insects that serve as vectors for parasitic diseases, this genus is arguably the most important.
Of the approximately 400 species of Anopheles, about two dozen serve as vectors for malaria ( Plasmodium spp.) in humans.
Mosquitos also serve as the vector for canine heart worm ( Dirofilaria immitis).

Anopheles is the "generic" name of a group of closely related mosquitoes and quadrimaculatus is the "species" name that represents a group of individuals that are similar in structure and physiology and capable of interbreeding.
Culex, Culiseta, and Anopheles lay their eggs on the water surface while many Aedes and Ochlerotatus lay their eggs on damp soil that will be flooded by water.
Anopheles quadrimaculatus was the primary vector of the Plasmodium vivax (protozoa) in the United States (Foote and Cook 1959).

Malaria - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Malaria is caused by the protozoan parasite, Plasmodium (one of the Apicomplexa) and the transmission vector for human malarial parasite is the Anopheles mosquito.
Infected female Anopheles mosquitoes carry Plasmodium sporozoites in their salivary glands.
If they bite a person, which they usually do starting at dusk and during the night, the sporozoites enter the person's body via the mosquito's saliva, migrate to the liver where they multiply within hepatic liver cells.

Malaria is transmitted by different Anopheles species, depending on the region and the environment.
Factors that should be taken into consideration when designing a control program include the susceptibility of malaria vectors to insecticides and the preferred feeding and resting location of adult mosquitoes.

Control of Malaria Vectors in Africa and Asia
The vectors of human malaria all belong to the genus Anopheles whose adults (Figure 1) are recognized by their "tail in the air" posture, dappled wings in most tropical species and long pair of palps beside the proboscis in the female.
Therefore rates of refusal of spraying by householders are lower with pyrethroids than with DDT and therefore there is a much better chance of reaching a level of coverage at which the vectorial capacity of the mosquito population will be lowered to a point at which malaria transmission will be interrupted.
However, it should be recognized that it only works by reducing the density of local vector populations and not by reducing their chances of survival to the dangerous age at which they can carry sporozoites.

genome sequence of the mosquito Anopheles gambiae : the prospects
Identification of the genes by traditional methods is, however, a long-drawn-out process, although Anopheles specialists were then looking at the sequencing of a large part or even the whole of the insect's genome.
Thanks to the Anopheles genome sequence, the Institut Pasteur researchers were extremely quickly able to discover the mosquito's equivalent gene, a potential target for preventing the development of the parasite; it would have taken much longer to locate it without this new data.
We do not know enough about the ecology of Anopheles in the wild, we have not the least idea of the way in which a population of transgenic mosquitoes would be able to supplant the natural populations.
