  Marillion: Anoraknophobia (Sanctuary Records, 2001.05.15)
Anoraknophobia started like any other album for me. We had obviously been talking about what we should do next, since the completion of.com and it's subsequent tour.

“Anoraknophobia” is certainly different to their previous releases, but it’s not as different as the band perhaps liked to think.

Anoraknophobia is, after all, Marillion's twelfth album, and the eighth one without Fish.
On average, most of the songs on Anoraknophobia do not (or just barely) reach the some level as some of the classic tracks from This Strange Engine and marillion.com, but as a whole the CD can certainly compete with those CDs.

The Music Box: Marillion - Anoraknophobia
The band has completely undergone a sonic makeover -- a change that has been in the works for more than a decade -- and now finds itself adrift in a sea of rock defined by the '00s instead of the '70s.
Likewise, the band merges Moby with Roxy Music to create the ambitiously ambient, but woefully meandering ballad When I Meet God; casts a psychedelic spell over the Kula Shaker-swirl of Separated Out; and etches This Is the 21st Century into a dreamy aura that has an awful lot in common with the recently reformulated Waterboys.
Though all of the tracks on Anoraknophobia have their moments, they also tend to wander on for far too long, greatly overstaying their welcome.

More than just a landmark album in the recording industry, Anoraknophobia is a great album that melds modern rock with a classic Marillion feel.
Anoraknophobia is the least Progressive Rock influenced album of the band's since 1991's Holidays In Eden, as only "This is the 21st Century" contains overt elements of that genre.

Anoraknophobia is the first album to come from the band where they are completely unconstrained from record company guidance or demands - and if this is what happens when bands are given their head, then maybe it wouldn't be a bad thing if a few other bands or artists took their lead.
The fact that Anoraknophobia is such a good album, is no more that we expect from Marillion.
This band and album bears no relation to the band that signed to EMI in the early 80's - they have moved on and the critics should also do the same and perhaps listen to what the band are doing now, rather than compare them with what they were doing then.
