Topic: Anostraca

In the News (Wed 15 Feb 12)

 [No title]
The Anostraca are placed with the orders Conchostraca, Notostraca and Cladocera in the Branchiopoda.
In the Anostraca the carapace is absent and the elongate body is visibly segmented.
The head is distinct from the trunk, and bears prominent stalked compound eyes and unsegmented and single-branched (uniramous) first antennae which project forward from the body, and in some species are fused at their bases.

 References
The study of the structure of communities of Crustacean branchiopods Anostraca, Notostraca and Spinicaudata of temporary ponds in Morocco revealed the existence of a geographical area with a particularly diversified number of species.
While most of them are usually allopatric and belong to distinct associations, indicative of particular ecological and climatic conditions, they can coexist in Chaouia plain, either in adjoining ponds (sympatric species) or in the same pond (syntopic species).
This faunistic diversity may result from abiotic features (the location of the ponds at the boundary of two climatic areas) and from a heterogeneous geological substratum, creating a patchwork of temporary ponds with various mesologic conditions.

 Brine Shrimp
Anostraca is an ancient line of primitive crustaceans found today in inland, relictual, waters such as snow-melt pools, wet weather ponds, saline or alkaline lakes, or similar refugia where there are few or no predators.
Artemia is restricted to saline lakes and consequently cannot be collected locally in most places.

ARTEMIA SALINA - SEA MONKEYS - URZEITKREBSE - BRINE SHRIMP - SEA MONKEY
The Artemia Salina belong to a genus of very primordial crustacean (crawfish - crayfish) - the Anostraca (Fairy Shrimps).
Crawfish of this genus just have a divided exoskeleton made of Chitin enhanced protein, no usual crust of chitin (escutcheon) as other crawfish have.
There are many species within the genus of Anostraca, but the Artemia salina are very nice to grow, since the rate of successful hatches is very high.

The absence of fairy shrimp (Anostraca) from permanent ponds and lakes is hypothesized to be the result of vertebrate predation.
However, hatching cues for anostracan diapausing eggs include factors associated with the filling of temporary pond basins, and desiccation often increases the fraction of eggs that hatch.
Because our results demonstrate that dispersal between ponds can occur in large numbers, they support the prevailing hypothesis that vertebrate predators limited to permanent ponds are the proximate mechanism preventing the invasion of fairy shrimp.
