Mark Brine: Fav Albums: Another Side of Bob Dylan
Another Side is filled with mostly introspective and occasionally surreal lyrics, seen by many as a nod to the rock'n'roll he would experiment with on his next record.
One of the most celebrated songs on Another Side of Bob Dylan is sung from the point-of-view of two friends (or possibly lovers) huddled in a church doorway, watching the sky during a thunderstorm.
As Another Side of Bob Dylan was prepared for release, Dylan premiered his new songs at the Newport Folk Festival in July of 1964.

Dylan recorded the album in a single session on the night of June 9, 1964.
Dylan later left for Europe, completing a few performances in England before traveling to Paris where he was introduced to a German model, Christa Paffgen, who went by the name of Nico.
After treating Dylan to a meal at her flat, Nico accompanied Dylan across Europe, a trip that passed through Germany before ending in Vernilya, a small village outside of Athens, Greece.

Bob Dylan’s catalog first arrived in the digital age in the mid-eighties, and unlike most compact discs issued in the early days of the format, the Dylan CDs were, for the most part, never upgraded.
While young Dylan found nourishment by sinking roots into early blues and country music and, especially, the work of Woody Guthrie, he hotwired his influences, shared by many of his contemporaries in the folk scene, in a way none of his fellow musicians did.
Dylan saw a way to make folk songs both political and personal, and his ragged, whispered voice gave the impressions that he was telling the most intimate of secrets.

Perhaps the most remarkable thing about "Another Side Of Bob Dylan" is that the eleven tracks on the album, along with several that did not make it, were all recorded in one six hour session that began at seven thirty on the evening of June 9th 1964 and ended at one thirty the following morning.
Dylan is obviously enjoying himself, but the song is too long and what wit there is, is buried under too many unfunny in jokes.
Carla had been one of Dylan's biggest supporters when he first arrived in New York, but in the song he refers to her as a parasite and petty, and did not warn her of the song - the first time she heard it was on the album.

Another Side of Bob Dylan, recorded in 1964, was a much more personal, introspective collection of songs, far less politically charged than Dylans previous efforts.

Poetry, Dylan had become a poet and to all of those who think there are hidden meaning in his words I have to say, "No, I don't think so." I think Dylan put it all out there, said what he meant and meant what he said.

At first, the folk community declared Another Side of Bob Dylan to be a bit of a disappointment.
Another Side's structures and concerns are already humming with the charging rush that soon would rocket Dylan full-throttle into Bringing It On Back Home, leaving the earthy protests of Times in its urban dust.
Another Side is the first major step after the fork in the road, and while Dylan's chosen path may have upset his scene, it also was soon to lead to the most concentrated, magical, and impressive creative burst in the history of rock music.

The other side of Bob Dylan referred to in the title is presumably his romantic, absurdist, and whimsical one -- anything that wasn't featured on the staunchly folky, protest-heavy Times They Are a-Changin', really.
Because of this, Another Side of Bob Dylan is a more varied record and it's more successful, too, since it captures Dylan expanding his music, turning in imaginative, poetic performances on love songs and protest tunes alike.
Both the lyrics and music have gotten deeper and Dylan's trying more things -- this, in its construction and attitude, is hardly strictly folk, as it encompasses far more than that.
