Trying to convincingly play house while keeping an eye on the home of their unsuspecting neighbors, this dysfunctional clan of incompatible companions is at one another's throats as they await the appearance of a missing witness for the state's case against a Las Vegas mob boss.
The main problem with Another Stakeout is that it just isn't as strong as the first film.
After the first film, "Stakeout," made a huge splash at the box office in 1987 (the same year another cop-buddy film came out--can you guess which one?), everyone anticipated an unnecessary--but perhaps funny--sequel that would inevitably result after box office earnings were tallied up by film...

After a promising opening scene that is truly explosive, Another Stakeout quickly deteriorates into childish physical humor and stilted wisecracking.
Her son Ronnie, presumably the culprit (and a role attributed to Taylor Estevez in the closing credits), never appears in the finished film.
Another Stakeout is director John Badham's first sequel, and he should have left well enough alone.

Emilio Estevez, a member of the aging "brat pack", is adequate, although, as in the original, he has trouble carrying scenes on his own.
Dan Lauria is on hand again, reprising his role, although in the interim, his character has been promoted to chief, and he's just itching to find some way to stick it to his two least-favorite detectives.
The humor ranges from mildly amusing to downright hilarious, and the action scenes are handled with an eye for pacing and tension.

However, that was six years ago, and while "Another Stakeout" must have looked good on paper, the film seems like a hurried proposition that could have used another screenplay draft.
After an initial explosive prelude, "Another Stakeout" has a Seattle waterfront/fish market chase not unlike the one that introduced the main characters to us in the original film.
"Another Stakeout" is rated PG-13 for violence (which seems truncated, edited down to purposely avoid the R rating of the original film), profanity and vulgar dialogue.

After the first film, "Stakeout," made a huge splash at the box office in 1987 (the same year another cop-buddy film came out--can you guess which one?), everyone anticipated an unnecessary--but perhaps funny--sequel that would inevitably result after box office earnings were tallied up by film executives in an office somewhere.
The new partner is played by Rosie O'Donnell, who is so startlingly unfunny in this it almost makes you involuntarily switch off the television as soon as you see her chubby face smiling at you.
But if you've got a sequel to an R-rated movie like "Stakeout" and you decide to turn its sequel into a cutesy-tutesy children's entertainment program, you'd better advise the audience before they sit down expecting something funny and fresh.

Pretty much the entire cast and crew from Stakeout are reunited by director John Badham for the sequel and, luckily, there is enough new material, slapstick comedy moments and solid performances from the trio of stars to ensure that this isn't just a rehash of the original.

Look up bad sequel in the dictionary and chances are “Another Stakeout” will be scrawled there.
Gone is the great chemistry between leads, Dreyfuss and Estevez, absent is any sort of expectancy or allure, and mostly, the three dimensional characters from the first film are now about as uniform as durable wood.
This time, Bill [Estevez] and Chris [Dreyfuss minus his moustache] are joined by Gina [Rosie O’Donnell], a D.A rep, and are assigned to stakeout the lakeside home of a couple who might be in contact with a woman who has escaped the witness protection program.
