Microtia or anotia is an isolated condition in 65% of cases (Harris et al., 1996; Mastroiacovo et al., 1995; Castillo and Orioli, 1986), although several investigations reported isolated rates of less than 50% (Sanchez et al., 1997; Castillo and Lopez-Camelo, 1990).
Isolated microtia and anotia are not associated with fetal death (Mastroiacovo et al., 1995; Julian-Reynier et al., 1994).
In one study, the sex ratio was higher in infants with isolated microtia or anotia (1.66) than in infants with microtia or anotia and associated birth defects (1.24) (Harris et al., 1996).

eMedicine - Ear Reconstruction : Article by Michael J Biavati, MD   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Auricular malformations range from anotia to mild alterations in the external form of the ear.
The malformed ear may be completely absent (grade 4 microtia or anotia), but, most commonly, a residual malpositioned lobule is present beneath a rudimentary hillock of cartilage (grade 3 microtia).
Prosthetic replacement may be the best alternative in a person with complete anotia because reconstruction of the lobule is a challenging task and often is met with less than optimal results.
