Anoxic event - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Although anoxic events have not happened for millions of years, the geological record shows that they happened many times in the past, and sometimes have caused mass extinctions.
The concept of the oceanic anoxic event (OAE) was first proposed in 1976 by Seymour Schlanger and Hugh Jenkyns and arose from discoveries made by the Deep Sea Drilling Project in the Pacific Ocean.
The second hypothesis suggests that oceanic anoxic events record a major change in the fertility of the oceans that resulted in an increase in organic-walled plankton and bacteria at the expense of calcareous plankton such as coccoliths and foraminifera.

 The Permo-Triassic Extinction
This remarkable event, dubbed 'The Mother of Mass Extinctions,' is by a wide margin the most severe in the history of life on earth, and drastically affected the composition and subsequent evolution of earth's biota.
Anoxic or dysoxic conditions may have played a major role in the marine extinctions, and was surely a factor in very slow post-extinction recovery.

Previously thought to be confined to the Atlantic-Tethys Ocean (present-day southern Europe) during the Early Cretaceous, the anoxic event actually stretched into the deep Pacific, write Elisabetta Erba of the University of Milan and colleagues in the February Geology.
The event is associated with a drastic change in the global carbon cycle, which would have played a significant role in ancient global climate.
Larson suspects that the event “ultimately goes back to the breakup of Gondwana, which is exactly time-coincident with the anoxic event,” he says.

Children who sustain an anoxic event often display deficits in two primary domains: memory and attention.
Travis, sustained an anoxic event from a near suffocation following "horseplay" and is unable to simultaneously listen and take notes in class while his teacher gives a lecture.
Visuospatial deficits involve problems in perceiving spatial relationships judging distance between objects or self and 2 or more objects (e.g being able to play soccer because the child doesn't know where she should be relative to where her teammates on the field).

This provides compelling evidence that the Chicxulub impact event is responsible for both the shocked minerals observed in the upper member of the KT boundary sequence and the glass rich lower member.
The relative proportion of carbonate to anhydrite excavated by the impact is obscured by the cratering event, but a drillhole (Y-4) that is 50 km outside of the outer ring structure encountered ~1.25 km of Cretaceous limestone, marl, and dolomite overlaying ~0.30 km of anhydrite, which overlays crystalline basement [12].
Determination of the relative proportion of the minerals that devolatized during impact is an essential factor in assessing the influence of the impact on the chemistry of the Earth's atmosphere and in turn the potential climatic and environmental changes induced by the impact.

EO News: Burnt Coal from the Age of Dinosaurs Sheds Light on Today's Global Warming - May 25, 2005
During what geologists call “oceanic anoxic events,” it has long been suggested that a large amount of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere by millions of microscopic organisms that dwell in the oceans.
When they die, their bodies rain down to the ocean depths and are buried by sediment, locking away the trapped carbon from the atmosphere for million of years.
This was probably due to the great number and activity of marine organisms at this time that effectively sucked carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere like a sponge.
