Gifu Prefecture consists of the old provinces of Hida and Mino.
March 27, 2006-the town of Kamiishizu from Yoro District and the town of Sunomata from Anpachi District merged into the city of Ogaki.
Gifu's economy includes many traditional industries such as agriculture and woodworking, but it is dominated by manufacturing industries extending from the Nagoya area, such as aerospace and automotive industry.

The name Gifu was given in the Sengoku period by Oda Nobunaga, a leading feudal lord in province that is now Aichi Prefecture.

In 1990, the NGO known as the Nagara River Downstream Area Biological Survey Group (headed by Professor K. Yamauchi of Gifu University, and known henceforth as the Survey Group) was formed to investigate effects on the ecosystem, and began to survey the distribution of organisms in the Nagara River before the dam went into operation.
According to official fishery statistics from Gifu Prefecture, the amount of Eriocheir caught in 1998 was 0.8 ton, a sharp drop from the almost 1.5 tons caught in 1996.

After that, the Statue of Chisui Kannon, praying for floodcontrol and peace, was built in September, 1978.
The Statue of Chisui Kannon is 150 meters tall, and the engraved inscription on the pedestral of the Statue, wishing for tranquility of the town's land, is a memorial for the dead in this flood, especially commemorating the district leader Chitaro Tomida, who worked very hard against this flood, which brought about his death.
