Indisk mystik: II. Hur Västerlandet upptäckte den indiska mystiken. Hare Krishna-samfundet Shri Chaitanya Saraswat Math i Sverige

Orientalism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
With the translation of the Avesta by Abraham Anquetil-Duperron and the discovery of the Indo-European languages by William Jones complex connections between the early history of Eastern and Western cultures emerged.
However, these developments occurred in the context of rivalry between France and Britain for control of India, and were associated with attempts to understand colonised cultures in order more effectively to control them.
Others praised the religious tolerance of Islamic countries in contrast with the Christian West, or the status of scholarship in Mandarin China.

 Iranica.com - xii(b). IRANIAN STUDIES IN FRANCE: PRE-ISLAMIC PERIOD
Abraham Hyacinthe Anquetil-Duperron (q.v.; 1731-1805) is generally regarded as a pioneer of pre-Islamic Persian studies who succeeded in collecting 180 manuscripts, including copies of the Avesta and samples of most Indian languages during his stay in India.
He wrote a Commentaire sur le Yaçna (2 vols., Paris, 1833-35), based on four manuscripts of the Avesta, the translation of the Pahlavi commentary by Anquetil du Perron ( Zend-Avesta, Paris, 1771), and the unedited Sanskrit version of Neriosengh of the same commentary.
It was left to Eugeàne Burnouf (q.v.; 1801-52), the founder of Iranian linguistics, to establish the basis of the scientific study of the Avesta.

Anquetil's translation was still the only guide, and as the doubts about the authenticity of the texts grew fainter, the authority of the translation became greater, the trust reposed in the Avesta being reflected on to the work of its interpreter.
It is true that Anquetil had given full scope to satire by the style he had adopted: he cared very little for literary elegance, and did not mind writing Zend and Persian in French; so the new and strange ideas he had to express looked stranger still in the outlandish garb he gave them.
Anquetil and the Avesta found an eager champion in the person of Kleuker, professor in the University of Riga.

 Zarathushtra and the European Experience
century by the French scholar Anquetil Duperron, it was the turn of the Humanists, made of philosophers, scholars, writers, poets, musicians, artists to enter this ideological battle.
They accused Duperron of being a forger and the translation of Avesta a forgery.
Facing such a poisoning situation, Duperon, himself a faithful Roman Catholic, set back and refused to see anything in the Avesta that could be used against Christianity.

Early ideas and guesses on Soma and Haoma Already Abraham Rogerius, the 17th century missionary from Holland, was familiar with the word *soma*, as he writes in his Open Deure tot het Verborgen Heydendom (1651) that it means "moon" in the language which he calls "Samscortam" [5].
But it seems that it was only in the second half of the 18th century that Europeans started to gather more detailed informations about Vedic rituals, including the use of Soma (in the meaning of the plant and the inebriating drink created from it).

His argument is basically that the ancient Jewish abrahamic religion was directly affected and significantly transformed by Persian influence, mostly in the Hellenistic era.
The main vehicles of that influence were Jewish Apocalypses, in Daniel (the last-written book of the Old Testament), and in Second Isaiah (the scholars see the Book of Isaiah as written in about 4 stages), but especially BOOK OF JUBILEES, and 1 ENOCH.
His earlier book, IN PURSUIT OF THE MILLENNIUM, was very influential and widely read in academic circles.
