The High Crusade   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-07)
It is 1345 AD, and in the English town of Ansby (in northeastern Lincolnshire), Sir Roger, Baron de Tourneville, is recruiting a military force in order to assist King Edward III in the Hundred Years' War against France.
It may be confusing that backward countrymen could defeat highly-advanced alien beings, but after centuries of space travel, the Wersgorix were used to taking planets easily, with little or no resistance from natives.
The people of Ansby are mystified at the advanced technology aboard the ship, which they come to call the Crusader.

Book Review: The High Crusade   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-07)
From the moment the Wersgorix scouting party disembarks from their ship, confident in their supposed overwhelming technological superiority over the English "barbarians", all the usual stereotypes about religion and science are cleverly and dramatically reversed with great rhetorical and storial effect.
For instance, contrary to the superficial Modern belief that religious biases (particularly Christian ones) contribute only to ignorance, superstition, and repression of true "progress", the Medievals of little English Ansby demonstrate the true power of a life lived in devotion to Jehovah, the God of Battles.
As well they manage to reveal the true, synthesizing power of the Medieval vision, which, far from being repressive of knowledge and advance, simply operated according to a very different scheme of how human beings know things and was quite able to handle new ways of thinking (within reason, of course).

Ex Libris Reviews: 1 November 2000
It is 1345, and troops are gathering in the little town of Ansby, shortly to march off to the wars in France under the command of Ansby's lord, Sir Roger de Tourneville.
Overjoyed by their easy victory, and well aware of how much damage the ship could have done, Sir Roger determines to take it to France, end the war in England's favor, and then go on to the Holy Land to free it from the Paynim.
The remaining alien doublecrosses him, and before the people of Ansby know what's happening, the entire village, men, women, children, pigs, cows, sheep, and all are flying through space to the nearest alien world.

In the year of grace 1345, as Sir Roger Baron de Tourneville is gathering an army to join King Edward III in the war against France, a most astonishing event occurs: a huge silver ship descends through the sky and lands in a pasture beside the little village of Ansby in North East Lincolnshire.
The Wersgorix, whose scouting ship it is, are quite expert at taking over planets, and having determined from orbit that this one was suitable, they initiate standard world-conquering procedure.
