Anseba region is home to diverse communities in terms of language, religion and culture.
In addition the Anseba region is the home of great religious diversity: with equal proportion of Christians and Moslems, with remarkable sharing of festivals and mutual respect for each other’s faith.
The Anseba region was considered by the Ethiopian government to have been the centre of the Eritrean independence struggle.

In Gash Barka and Anseba the areas planted to cereals were respectively 187 318 ha and 45 303 ha, both considerably higher than last year’s areas of 151 668 ha and 36 456 ha, respectively.
Large numbers of oxen were reported to have died from starvation and the effects of drought during 2002, and many farmers reported having sold oxen to survive, after a succession of bad harvests and also because they had no feed for them; this has left a large gap in the availability of farm power.
Farming households in the highland parts of Anseba, Maekel and Debub practice a sedentary (intensive cropping) mode farming system, and livestock are kept for the supply of draught power, milk, meat, eggs, animal manure; they also serve as pack animals.

ITN coverage estimates within Anseba and Gash Barka Provinces from the 2002 Eritrean Demographic and Health Survey, implemented just prior to a large-scale ITN distribution programme, are compared to estimates from the same area from a sub-national Bednet Survey implemented 18 months later in 2003 after the roll-out of the ITN programme.
While transmission is moderate with population estimates of malaria parasitemia ranging from 0.4% to 6.5% [13], malaria has historically represented a significant public health problem, accounting for 28% of all hospital admissions and 30% of all outpatient morbidity [13,14].
RBM coverage indicators for ITN use among children and pregnant women within Anseba and Gash-Barka were dramatically higher on the Bednet Survey in 2003 as compared to the EDHS in 2002 (Figure 3).

Working with ERREC and local government officials from zoba Anseba, we were able to locate 6 areas where IDPs have congregated (Fana, Shitel, Obelet, Shibukh, Adi Fakai, and Mensura), one distribution site (Hagaz) and one major IDP camp (Deb'at, formerly known as Ziron).
The IDPs we visited were mostly from the Gash-Barka region, some having already come from other displacement camps, fleeing Ethiopian shelling and bombardment of their towns, villages and homes.
The one major IDP camp in zoba Anseba, Deb'at (approximately 23 km north of Keren), now houses over 46,000 IDPs, with another 40,000 - 50,000 already located and in the process of being registered for food aid and other services scattered over the Anseba region.

This disease caused yield reductions estimated at 30% in Anseba alone in 2000.

ASMARA, 17 Nov 2003 (IRIN) - UN officials have warned of a move towards a “silent humanitarian emergency” in Eritrea unless the level of international aid is sustained.
Christian Balslev-Oleson, country representative of the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), pointed out that malnutrition among women and children in the traditional breadbasket regions of Gash Barka and Anseba was rising rapidly.
Some 47 percent of women of reproductive age are malnourished in Gash Barka while in Anseba the figure reaches an alarming 52.5 percent.

In total, one third of the population living in the arid and semi-arid zones of Anseba, Northern Red Sea and Southern Red Sea risk food shortages and the loss of livestock -- their main source of prestige and wealth.
Even at the best of times, these areas are prone to drought and are forced to rely on buying grain from the fertile Debub and Gash Barka.
