 Anseriformes - EvoWiki
Anseriformes (Wagler, 1830) is an order of aquatic birds including Anhimidae (screamers), Anseranatidae (a monotypic family whose sole member is the magpie goose, Anseranas semipalmata), Anatidae (including true ducks, geese, and swans) and the extinct family Presbyornithidae.
With a some exceptions, it is now widely believed that anseriforms share most recent common ancestry with the Galliformes, or land fowl, forming a clade referred to as Galloanserae.
Within the Anseres, the magpie goose (Anseranas semipalmata) is the most primitive lineage, the sister to the clade formed by the Presbyornithidae and Anatidae.

Temporal and Spatial Variation in the Distribution and Abundance of the Magpie Goose, Anseranas semipalmata, in the Rockhampton Region of the Queensland Coast
The distribution, abundance and habitat of the magpie goose, Anseranas semipalmata, were studied from February 1987 to March 1990 and examined in relation to season, rainfall and evaporation, and the availability of sedges (Eleocharis spp.) in the Rockhampton area on the central Queensland coast.
Seasonal fluctuations in abundance of the magpie goose were correlated with the 12-month cumulative difference between rainfall and evaporation in Rockhampton.

Nonetheless, from the plentiful remains of Eocene presbyornithids and the living magpie goose, Anseranas (a close relative of Anatalavis), we can be confident that even these early Anseres possessed many of the characteristic skull features of modern geese.
These characters include the bill itself, a relatively large flattened rhamphotheca with the upper bill overlapping the lower, supported by an enlarged premaxilla which is rounded anteriorly.
Olson [O99] also notes that Anatalavis and Anseranas have little in common except for the unusual furcula and distal pneumatic fossa of the coracoid.

 magpie goose --  Encyclopædia Britannica
also called Pied, or Semipalmated, Goose (Anseranas semipalmata), large aberrant waterfowl of Australia and Papua New Guinea, the sole member of the subfamily Anseranatinae, family Anatidae (order Anseriformes).
The sexes are alike in having a fl-and-white body (hence “magpie”), long neck, long legs, and virtually unwebbed toes; the long hooked bill and bare face give the bird a vulturish look.

A PARTIAL CLASSIFICATION OF WATERFOWL (ANATIDAE) BASED ON SINGLE-COPY DNA   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
Northern Screamer (SC) material came from Mary Dam (Haines City, Florida), the Magpie Goose (MG) (Anseranas semipalmata) and Trumpeter Swan (TS) (Cygnus buccinator) from Mi- chael Lubbock (Sylva, North Carolina), and the Freck- led Duck (FD) (Stictonetta naevosa) from the Wildfowl Trust (Slimbridge, United Kingdom).
We believe that the Mag- pie Goose (Anseranas) lineage diverged very early (von Boetticher 1940) and the whistling- ducks (Dendrocygnini) and the stifftails (Oxy- urini) diverged somewhat more recently from the main lineage.
Specific results with respect to the early divergence of the Ruddy Duck (Oxy- ura) are interesting because in virtually all schemes for the classification of waterfowl this tribe has been included in the subfamily Ana- tinae.
