Anson County, once the largest in the state with a border on the Mississippi River, was carved from Bladen County in 1750.
Anson is a largely rural area with 536 square miles and a population of 25,275 (2000 Census).
Located in the south central region of North Carolina, the county is bordered by Richmond, Stanly and Union counties, and Chesterfield County, S.C. The county seat is Wadesboro.

Benjamin Thomas died in 1833, and was buried at the Old Thomas Cemetery situated near Charity Ford on the north side of Richardson's Creek.
The second Benjamin Thomas lived in Anson and Richmond Counties NC before moving to South Carolina and then to Tennessee prior to 1800.

The 18th-century Boggan-Hammond House, the first restored historic building in Anson County, was built by Capt. Patrick Boggan, donor of the land for the town of Wadesborough.
Chartered as New Town in 1783, the present name of the county seat was adopted in 1878.
Boggan and his brother-in-law, Col. Thomas Wade, were among the founders of the town.
